single best upgrade you can do for an old computer is an ssd drive.
ram maybe second best, but second best by a long shot.

Best thing is you can re-use the ssd in your next rig.

Pop in an ssd and a 4GB kit on a fresh install and it will feel like a new system.

4gb of ram and SSD. SSD being the more important.

SSD will be noticeable and not slightly ether. You can get 60gb ssd's for cheap, use his old HDD for storage. Just move most of the user folders to the HDD like documents and photos and the SSD should be fine for space.

You can pick up solid refurb ssd's on newegg for like 30 bucks, I have gotten a couple of them myself and never had a single problem yet with one.

I'd just upgrade the RAM to 4GB, it can't hurt and if you have money get an SSD.

If he's complaining about it being slow at tasks rather than just feeling sluggish in general, then maybe he's looking for a better CPU.
You didn't mention what he does with it, or really much info at all so I'm just guessing.

Is CPU is well more then enough.

4GB will do a lot of good, 2gb can be a little limiting.

SSD will make the system feel new though. HDD's have been the biggest bottleneck for computers for a long time. They just can't do random seek well, They feel slow no matter what machine you have.

I have a 2.8ghz C2D in my laptop, with 4gb of ram and a ssd the machine screams. Everything opens as soon as I click them and the CPU can power pretty much any task.

Trust me a 2.7ghz C2D based chip is not going to make a PC feel slow.

the absolute biggest bang for your buck will be an ssd. The difference in speed between a decent ssd and a nmechanical drive is an order of magnitude.
Yes, you can get a faster cpu, more and faster ram, but you gains in terms of percentages (or maybe even fractions of percent), nothing else will give you that much of a boost. It really is night and day.

I have an old xenon lga 771 board, and maxed it out out with two lga771 x5365 quad core chips, 16 megs of ram, and decent (NVidia 660) video. I've been thinking of upgrading to a new haswell chip/mobo, but really wanted to wait for an x99 board to come out; I went from using a 4xwd red RAID 0 array as my boot array to a single, smsung evo 840 512 gig ssd, and the difference is absolutely amazing. I have no issues waiting until later this year to upgrade and, even then, may not.
