vmware virtual machines VT-d vs No VTd ( 4770 vs 4770k )

I am relatively new to visualization and virtual machines in general so i come back here from my brief research into VT-d and how would it benefit me but all i have found out that it gives direct hardware i/o which i dont clearly understand and would be delighted if anyone could explain to me

my purpose for this 'server' you could say i am hoping to run 4 vms or more if possible , running a very non compute intensive game ( think of runescape level graphics etc ). there will be nothing running on the actual computer apart from me playing the occasional games or programming. i am just wondering how will VT-d would benefit me if i chose to buy a 4770 instead of a 4770k
yes i am looking to overclock as much as an nh-d14 is going to let me and i will be running this system 24/7
my idea for the system is
4770k/4770
asus maximus vi hero/gigabyte oc
16gb ram @ 1600
4870 as a placeholder gpu until i can afford r9 290

will appreciate any tips aswell as later on i may be looking into buying some second hand or first hand server grade hardware so recommendations would be appreciated

VT-d won't do anything unless you are running a host/hypervisor that has the ability to support it and you need the guest OSes to have direct access to hardware and peripherals.

Normally, only the CPU and memory systems are truly virtualized. Other hardware is either on a compatibility layer, or is emulated. VT-d and IOMMU allow nearly any piece of hardware connected to the host to be utilized near natively by a guest.

would the gpu than benefit from VT-d significantly? or because the graphics proccesssing that the game will require is so minimal it wouldnt matter? especially after i add in r9 290?

You can get vastly more GPU performance out of a guest OS that has direct access to it, yes.

However, you'd need a virtualization platform that supports VT-d. VMware Workstation does not support VT-d, nor does any other Virtualization software that runs inside a Windows host, to the best of my knowledge.

Do you need near native 3D performance inside your VMs?

the graphics performance is gona be very basic on the VMs so i dont think it should be bottlenecking anything once i get r9 290 inside

If the VM doesn't much graphics performance or another good reason for direct hardware access, you do not need VT-d.

I haven't done any research but I think you might not have any hardware 3D acceleration at all - it might just be a software driver.

VT-d allows you to access a PCI or PCI-E card through a VM. This card will be reserved for use by the VM. If you are thinking about a graphics card, this can't be the graphics card that you are currently using in your host OS for your normal desktop. It's about a graphics card that's separate and only intended for that VM. You will use that on its own monitor.

That's how I understood it.

There's a thread somewhere about people using Xen for gaming. The host is its own OS and has no UI really, so it does not need the graphics card. The guys use Windows for gaming in a Xen VM while other OSs are also running on the same machine.

What you can do without VT-d on the 4770k or 4670k is using USB devices. That works fine. So it's not quite right that you need VT-d for peripherals. I'm using a VM for an old scanner that only has a 32-bit Windows driver.

3D acceleration in a VM on the same desktop (graphics card) that you are using in your host OS is running through special graphics drivers you get through the guest additions of VMWare or VirtualBox. This works without VT-d.

Both VMware Workstation and VirtualBox have hardware 3D acceleration for OGL and DX9 without direct access to the host GPU. It's some sort of compatibility layer, no need for VT-d.

In my experience, VMware 10 will net you about 50% of the native speed of your GPU this way.
