It isn't often that the capacity of the hard drive increases, but today we were lucky enough to receive the first 6TB HDD in production. The HGST He6 is a filled with helium to allow for thinner platters and a number of other advancements, including lower power consumption and weight. This is a drive destined for the datacenter, but all technology tends to eventually bleed down to the consumer space.

Well they should stop using it for balloons, but yea its depleting and we don't like recapture it much(only time i have seen helium recaptured is in a lab), most of our helium comes from the byproduct of natural gas drilling. The US owns a bunch of the helium and the government controls the price, so when the supply goes very low then they will raise the price so that you can't use it for a lot of things like balloons.

but this is cool.

...well, there's always hydrogen, there's plenty of it (...other than the Hindenburg thing might get in the way)
