Need help with ubuntu update for ubuntu 12.04 lts[Solved]

Thread Starter

I installed ubuntu 12.04 lts on its own hd and the update made ubuntu keel over so i would like the cd into the installation from live cd as the os will not boot. I used the shell prompt in recovery to check the source of the problem and there seems to be a dependancy issue that is above my knowledge as i dont know how to fix it without synaptics or some other gtk. here is a pic of the output from trying apt-get commands:

.

do you guys have a way of fixing this for console or can someone walk me through fixing this with a live cd terminal?

Can we just ban this guy? All he does is spam FUD and misinformation...

Anyways - @OP; I'll be investigating this issue. I've not done many APT based upgrades... Do understand however, that one of the inherent risks of running dist-upgrade on any live system (including BSD @Captain) is package inconsistency between large version gaps, and incomplete upgrades leaving a broken system.

By definition an upgrade is changing the version of your packages from one synchronized state to another, we call this a release, if you having inconsistencies with the package versions that is a problem with the capabilities of the OS upgrade process.

OP did you interrupt the upgrade? Like rebooting it during the upgrade process? If not then that is a problem with the capabilities of the OS upgrade process.

Xaero stop making excuses for Ubuntu, there is no excuse for a broken upgrade. Also have you upgraded a BSD system before, because if anyone is spreading FUD, it's you.

yes indeed and sadly the ubuntu line of linux is suffering as they are trying to incorporate a load of bloatware into the os and i believe that may be the source of the dependancy lockup especially if upstart and procps dependancies are used for more tha just the os. sometimes the os thinks its the raringtail release and i have to check the selected updates to make sure i get the right ones. the problem with ubuntu is that it seems to think all the packages are the same whereas one was meant for longterm support and has stable packages(12.04 that i have) and the other is for all the latest tech and may contain packages that are not completely stable(raringtail). with all this being said i think it may be confused by the packages and i want to remove some packages and then manually fix the dependancies using synaptics if i can find a way into the os or if someone can wal me through the terminal process i would love to jump in to that as well as i also use ubuntu as a learning experience and it has taught me so much already.(though i prefer linuxmint)

Also to addon to this i have to say that ubuntu has been a great os till this last series as they started this bloatware stuff and it was one of the easiest os'es to use. I say this to say it all os'es have a downside when they take the bloatware approach take windows for instance. I built the perfect pc for me but there updates kick up tons of issues like this is a awesome gaming machine but 8.1 has destroyed compatibility settings to an extent as you now have to work to make games work for previous games and if it worked from the start then you are a lucky individual. In the end though all os'es have some sort of appeal or else they would not still be around.

Geeez CaptBlame, lighten up, or more to the point do you think you might get over yourself enough to actually offer someone some help for a change instead of all the negativity? If you think anyone here is over-reacting to a BSD guy in a Linux section, just look at your post to rep ratio. Xaero's is twice what your is at 10%. Yours is 5%. Yet you accuse him of FUD. Maybe consider there is a reason for that. If you can't bring yourself and any expertise you have here to help, then ask yourself why you're here.

Hello and welcome to OCN Linux forums. I'd like to help and the first thing is to get our terms clear. I suspect that you are not using SteamOS but rather the Steam App on Ubuntu. Is that correct? If so, a number of fixes are possible. Also, how married are you to Ubuntu? Do you have lots of work into the configs or just some saved files and game saves you'd like to keep? Don't worry I'm not going to suggest some major distro change. It's just easier to help in a manner that you would like if you say what your wishes and conditions are.

There are some really good people here and I'm certain we can get this worked out to your satisfaction. Don't give up.

if i can get a reliable source for wheezy i would jump ship on ubuntu in a heartbeat. Yes i put a lot of work into ubuntu but i would be fine as long as i can install the steamos sessions on the distro and sli isn't to wonky on the distro. I am using ubuntu to learn linux as i have been for quite sometime if i can fix this i would love to do that if i dont have to reinstall but if not i am confused by the debian site but i would like help in finding the wheezy distro if possible. I am knowledged in terminal a little bit but not enough to work from terminal without a gtk around to know that i'm not messing up.
