I suspect DJ may be referring to what everyone else would call shared. I seem to recall reading about the actual SteamOS, which is essentially somewhat like a ChromeBook, a base OS having only a browser, having an option to "install Debian on top of SteamOS" to flesh it out to a full system, and the wording may have led to misunderstandings about what is really going on. AFAIK any distro dropped on top of SteamOS will share the identical kernel, thus it is not an OpSys actually inside another OpSys. It's just bad terminology.

If they have, the package will fail. Trying to install those dependencies on Debian from SteamOS, will probably hose your install

no it can be done it takes time and patience. what you are doing is making a hybrid. i want the abilities of steamos but i want them customized to my liking of a normal customized linux approach. The weird thing is that steamos has really warped the permissions so you have to start with a os and slowly convert hence me installing a base os and working on slowly converting the neccessary components to make this hybrid. This will be nothing more than a customized os with 2 different sources and i have to find what is compatible and what isn't. then i have to see what dependencies can be pulled from the original os in a harmless manner hence why the os will break a couple of times(ubuntu doesn't give me the chance i had installed that thing and it was doa every other install). Eventually i will find a medium and a balance for this hybrid os and then it is one final reinstallation then modding. It will be one os with the features of both and nothing is impossible in linux.

that installation is dead and it wasn't the repo's that was that cursed bloat they are trying to make standard in ubuntu

I think it is more likely that he installed the SteamOS Compsitor and whatever display manager he is using has a session for it. Also on the topic of it being like ChromeOS, If you look at the SteamOS FAQ, one of the questions is "What software runs on SteamOS?" and they basically say it will run any linux program. So the SteamOS install may only come with steam and a browser, but it's still a full fledged Debian install.

I installed way more than the compositor buddy. there was so much forcing versions for tons of stuff it was annoying. You just have to pick what you want out of the repo and if it was just the compositor then that means i'm just running big picture mode with a login screen

I'm just saying that the SteamOS compositor is what your DM is calling "SteamOS Session". It's not an OS within an OS or anything more complex than having multiple DEs.

in the process though i get a hybrid that has more functionality than just installing steamos compositor. if you just install the compositor you cannot shutdown, log off , and hibernate the os which is not enough. if you are going to try something dont start it and not finish it.

I'm not trying to start an argument, nor am I saying you did anything wrong. If you'll read chemicalfan's post, you'll see that someone was confused by what you were saying. I was simply trying to clarify what was going on to get rid of that confusion.

yes ok i see but in reality chemicalfan is thinking in a limited way anyhow. We all know with linux one thing is very consistent and that is that we can customize to our hearts content. then with that comes that there will always be a problem to solve. just because it is hard doesn't mean its impossible and calculus just teaches you to sectionize the problems so you can focus better. With that being said he should know it is possible to make hybrid os'es as they are made everyday just most people are too scared to take that extra step to get what they want. no it might not work right away but hell if i get it 3 or 4 months later then it was well worth it and that was 3 to 4 months of learning. as i have said i used linux for a year i learn very quickly but that is nowhere near enough to make the task less daunting.  I can learn from it though and that is why it has become my goal and i have been learning quite a bit actually. I have mac os x and windows in this rig and they each have their own hd plus i have a ssd laying around that i dont use so in the end i wont lose anything other than reinstalling the os but i will have gained a lot from pursuing this. ubuntu was a little tricky because of that unity crap but then once i got past keeping unity intact i was pretty much a hybrid and that didn't take long at all so i dont think it will be too hard once i get solydk going.

I'm glad we got that cleared up

@DJ- I applaud your industriousness and can-do attitude. It's a great way to learn Linux even if it does flirt with "crash and burn". Sometimes recovering from those teaches the most. Linux was originally designed by and for people like you, old skool hackers looking for clever ways to do playful things and learn in the process. Keep it up. Also, please do report back how things go with SolydK. It will be valuable to many but especially those who have 2 years or less in Linux. As much as you are "messing about" if it works well for you it should encourage average users that just want something simple and solid.... and fast, and especially that does a good job with gaming.

PS Don't let CaptBlame's negativity make you too defensive. Most here are really helpful. I have to remind myself of that from time to time, myself smile.gif
