Hey DJ. Sweet axe. I've played some nice G&Ls and why wouldn't they be? Leo Fender is a Master. I think you're smart to avoid the whammy but only because it appears the only one they offer is a Kahler and I hate those things. They feel and work OK but they alter the tone profoundly and make almost every guitar they're on sound the same and not in a good way. I also got spoiled by a PRS that taught me you don't need a locking nut to stay in tune. There are very few whammys I like but I do like the early Floyd Rose that comes w/o the locking nut.
Below is a photo of one of my favorite guitars I built from scratch. The back and neck are Honduras Mahogany and the top is tiger stripe maple. The body has carved chambers a la Jimmy D'Aquisto to give just the right resonance for max tone. The pickups are oddballs. The bridge is an old Ultrasonic (discontinued) and I made the coils switchable so I can get that Strat "in-between" tone perfectly. The center p/u is a 1/4 pounder Tele bridge pickup and the neck p/u is a mini PAF. The whammy was made by Schecter. The weird body shape shows the influence of my ancient Sears Silvertone Dan Electro (the one with lipstick tube pickups) which has the inverse round so that it stands up without falling. For years my Les Paul scared me to death that way.
Hope you get your G&L real soon.
