Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3..is it really a piece of poop?

I have a new Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 I think it is version 1.1, but I need to verify that. It's not sitting here with me right now. I really don't have a use for it, so I offered it up in a good deal to a friend of mine's son. I don't personally overclock, but I think he will. The CPU will probably be the FX-8320.
I think the earlier versions, like mine, don't have LLC

Anyway, we came across this thread on another forum where the chat was how bad version 3 of this board is.
That's news to me, I thought the construction quality was pretty nice. It's got a 8 phase power delivery. Of course, that's not everything.
the funny thing is, he mentions the earlier versions are legendary.

what do you guys think? I'm a bit concerned since overclocking will probably be done.

Here's the thread:

Thanks

That board is pretty good for overclocking.

Is this the one?

yeah, I meant the board in general. In that thread I referenced, he speaks of a lack of quality of the board, too thin, small heatsinks, where as I see the board as a having a nice quality feel, very thick, with nice heatsinks.

Maybe could use a bit better heatsinks around the VRM area, but that can be deceptive just going by looks alone. Like with the Z77X-UD3H board, it appears to have really wimpy VRM heatsinks, but the professional reviews show it's a fine overclocker with adequate heatsinks.

Some of the rev. 3.0 970A-UD3's used MOSFET's from another supplier that aren't as good a quality as the ones on the 1.x revisions. They still will work fine, but sometimes you need to get some air flowing over the VRM heatsinks and make sure that the sinks are tightly secured to the board (an issue that even the 1.x versions have).

If you have a rev. 1.1, it's an excellent board, and every bit the equal of a high-end 990FX board when it comes to being able to handle high-TDP octo-core FX and to overclock them. Make sure that you use the latest F8a BIOS revision if you're planning on using an 8350. When I got mine a little over a year ago (a rev. 1.2 board), it had all sorts of trouble handling my 8350 even though it could run a 1035T at 3.7 GHz. Giga tech support had me update from F7 to F8a, and the problem, whatever it was, went away.

As far as I know, all 970A-UD3 boards have LLC. If your friend's son is planning to OC an 8320, he should make use of it. The medium settings should do the job just fine.
