Oh. I would hate that. I mean, if Windows 8 and 8.1 would force me to use my mouse where I don't have to in Windows 7, then nevermind; I've lost interest. lol

That's your right, but I call it "efficient". I do things the fastest way possible. I prefer to take the path of least resistance on my computer in order to do things as fast and as efficiently as possible. The more I have to use the mouse, the slower and slower and clunkier and clunkier everything becomes. Having to click before I can do that search is clunky. Think about it: when you want to do a search, you're going to be typing. Right? Right. So, what if my hands are already on home row? Having to grab the mouse first just so I can begin my Start Menu search is clunky. In Windows 7, all I have to do is tap WinKey and begin typing. I can begin typing faster after that than I can after grabbing the mouse, clicking, letting go, and then putting my right hand back on home row.

I'd just like to add that sudden mobo death isn't unheard of, even after a good period of time.

Case in point, my NAS had been running 24/7 for a couple of years and one day it shut off and never came back on. Replaced the board and re-used all other components and it's fine til this day.

On the topic of windows 8.1, TwoCables you can just hit the windows key to search, no need to click anywhere. I open every program that's not on my desktop in the same way.

Also one thing people forget when they consider Windows 8/8.1 and the new start menu is that you can just put the programs you actually use on the start menu for quick access and if you needed to, with one click open all apps and select the one you're after. I personally only have 6 or so programs on my start menu that aren't used regularly enough to gain prime desktop estate.

Sorry for your loss PCSarge.

One thing that I would miss though is pinning items to the Taskbar. The first 10 items can be opened with WinKey + 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0. I love that. To me, WinKey+8 is Firefox. WinKey+3 is Outlook. WinKey+1 is the Creative Console Launcher. WinKey+4 is Calculator, WinKey+5 is Notepad, WinKey+6 is Paint.exe, WinKey+7 is WinDVD, 9 and 0 are always my 2 most-played games. The rest, I use Shortcut Keys in the shortcut properties.

You can still pin items to the task bar. Not sure whether you can Winkey + number because I don't open programs that way but I can check for you tomorrow if someone in the thread doesn't already.

If Microsoft isn't as stupid as I think they are, then I would assume that WinKey+# still works.

Stranger things have happened. Personally I have file explorer, chrome, steam, origin and windows media player in my taskbar. Games on my desktop and control panel, drive locations, OC/benching software (gpu/cpu-z, prime, hwinfo64) on my start menu and that's it, everything else I windows key + search.

Anyone who gives Windows 8/8.1 a reasonable go won't have a problem navigating the UI and will enjoy the better performance.

Anyway I'll stop hijacking the thread now redface.gif.
