How do I do a "special" case in java? My input is a string, so I don't know how to make it crash.

No idea what "special" case they are talking about....

To make the program crash, just set the value of a variable type to something incompatible....
Once again...

So I should check to see if my string input equals something like -1 for example, and if it does, then print an error and do a System.exit(0)?

Where does it say it needs to crash? It just mentions a "special" case. Perhaps you should check with the person who set the assignment what they meant. By putting "special" in quotes it seems to me that they couldn't think of a way to describe what they meant, and just hoped you'd read their mind.

EDIT: Perhaps the assignment is referring to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Null_Object_pattern
