And my point isn't that it's that the game looks like garbage - it doesn't. The problem is that it won awards like best technology or best visuals, despite competing against likes of Crysis 3, Metro:LL and so on. It just doesn't deserve the praise that it gets. It sets the bar low and makes it seem that such 'average' visuals are amazing.
When the game came out, I was pretty interested. It sounded pretty cool, and it was getting a lot of talk about "best graphics ever". I hadn't really seen any media up to this point, and I hadn't given it much mind. I then found some HD youtube "let's plays", started them up.... and my first reaction was "how can ANYONE think this looks good?!".

I think a lot of that is relative and sorta generalized. In sports the MVP might not be the best player in the league or the player a team would crumble the farthest without even if the award is for most "valuable" .

For game awards shows you have to account for stuff like atmosphere, design, and "technical achievement" so even if the game doesn't necessarily have the best textures but the world seems real (and depressing) and visuals help make feel alive all that stuff gets put into the pot.

When you take into account the hardware that is in the PS3 and how that game looks I think it's a much more impressive graphical feat than anything out on the PC! Even if that's a contradictory statement because, CLEARLY, graphically, it's inferior in almost every way to those game you mentioned before. The tech award is well deserved because if you can build that game on a modified 7800 GT and a single core CPU with 5 SPEs that have extremely limited uses your tech is otherworldly.

Basically I'm saying you're absolutely right and graphically it should be a no contest, but that's not the way awards actually work. Though better textures and some real AA and this game should look much much better! Hoping they do an upgrade program where I can get ps4 version for like 10 bucks or whatever. tongue.gif

I think TLOU does everything amazingly, especially for PS3. If they upped it majorly for PS4, then yes. It would compete with major PC games. thumb.gif

In short unless you have played the game you should keep quiet about it.

Honestly I feel the opposite. When you look at a the last of us running live you really notice the low resolution, low frame rate, all the jaggies and shimmers flying around. Sure the animation work is nice but really that's the only praise it deserves.

let's compare a game on a $200 console to a computer with $2000 worth of graphics cards!!

best part of it all, he hasn't even played the game, and judges them via screenshots or Youtube video which we know has compressions.

Naughty Dog is praised for squeezing every last juice out of the 7 year old PS3...so from a technical standpoint give credit where it's due. But if you ask me Quantic Dream created the best graphics on last gen consoles because they used a PS4 game engine.

So yeah beside from Last of Us GOTY ed on PS4 i think we'll see the same thing with Beyond 2 Souls.

Every game with good graphics will have moments where screenshots captures them in a very bad light. But since you like doing these biased comparsions and cherry pick esp with Crysis 3 face models I'll play:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Crysis 3 (PC's best...I believe it's still the only game built groundup with DX11....most likely the best until Witcher 3 in 2015)

Beyond 2 Souls (PS3's best)

Play Beyond on a now 8 year old console and tell me you aren't impressed (no youtube doesn't count)...then try and replicate Crysis 3 or anything close to that at 720p on a 8 year old computer.

So you think its fair to compare pre-rendered cuts-scenes on the PS3 to something that runs in real time on the PC because that's not comparing apples and oranges at all rolleyes.gif

Defenders of PS3 graphics do this all the time.

This is not what the last of us looks like when running real time.

The Last of Us is one of the best games I have ever played and I have been playing since the Atari days. One of the few games worth double dipping for IMO. Graphics are not simply about which game has the highest fidelity textures, lighting, and most cutting edge tech. It's about atmosphere, art direction, and being able to immerse you in the setting. BF4 and Crysis 3 have incredible graphics on Ultra, but they did not even get close to pulling me into the game like the Last of Us.

I can somewhat agree with that and so IMO a distinction should be made between good "art" and good "graphics". I think Dark souls had some really nice art but the graphics are pretty dated. But in the end what is and isn't good art is very subjective. Some consider Zelda Wind wakers art superb but I personally don't really care for it.

The thing is though people haven't been praising the last of us for just good art but rather for the graphics throwing out terms like "technical excellence", "a visual masterpiece", and being awarded Best Overall Graphics - Technology ect.

Considering the competition that is just insulting to the people that worked on the cutting edge PC titles.

I don't think a distinction can really be made the way you're suggesting. Graphics are just a subset of art, and made up of both the technical innovations and art direction. You can bump up resolution, throw all the AA, AO and tessellation you want at a game, and it won't pay off if the art direction isn't there. And of course vice versa.

Most seem to agree that the overall graphical experience in TLoU is very good. Even if it doesn't match the bleeding edge tech that's available on PC, it's "good enough" to realize the superb art direction behind the game. I don't think anyone (here) is arguing it's more of a technical marvel than Crysis 3.

Yeah but just like you say its a combination of things. In order for something to have the "best graphics" it has to not only excel in the art but also the technical side. No mater how you slice it The last of us and other PS3 titles are behind their PC counter parts in terms of tech and no amount of good art can fully compensate for that. As such I think its bull crap to award such a game any award about best graphics (unless specifically limited to console titles).

Like it has been said so man times. The last of us looks good for an PS3 game. That's it. Its so very tiring how some people go on and on about how incredible TLoU visuals are when they really aren't that special compared to what's been out on PC's.

Yeah B2S runs real time but thous where 1080p promotional images and sure as hell weren't running real time on an PS3. (The actual game runs something like 1000x450 letherbox)

Promotional wall papers

Actual in-game screen shot

The actual game textures and shading is dialed back quite a bit along with rendering resolution and AA. It still looks nice but nowhere near the same level as the promo stuff.
