Sure Doctors, Nurses, etc deserve to be paid.. a reasonable and affordable rate for the services the provide. How many people die needlessly because they're charged out of life and can't afford to be saved? There are huge issues in the medical community, and I have been involved in it to some degree for the past 20 years or so as there are medical workers in my immediate family. And since you went there, I do donate my time and resources to my local community and participate in helping others in whatever ways I can. Check out GoCincinnati (google it) and there's just one example of where I plan on helping soon.
The cost of medical services in the US and other 1st world countries is insane, in many ways driven by insurance price fixing, unregulated pharmaceuticals and overcompensating for the litigation craze/fear. Meanwhile millions die each year all over the world that could be saved should a few cents could be spared. Many don't have access to even the most basic and cheap of medicine.
Hell, millions die cause of artificial obstacles in getting food - advanced medical care is too exotic to even be considered an issue for a very large part of the global population.
Elysium is not a story for the rich smucks living in orbit. Those will do their thing, whether we like it or not to an extend.
Still, we are 7bil and rising fast.
We are too many. People should 1st understand contraceptives, then demand for affordable health care, sustainability and equal opportunities, access to proper education, medicine etc.
We reproduce ourselves like mindless cattle, we get treated like that. If we won't stop, we will drown in our own waste, like an in-vitro bacterial culture.

They deserve compensation, sure, never said they didn't... but letting someone die to save money or because of another trivial matter is ridiculous. I make it a point not to expect from others what I wouldn't be willing to do myself. Not enough people live this way, and I'm no saint, but you have to walk the talk to expect it from others.
Thousands serve in organizations like "Doctors without borders
". Many for quite a few years of their life.
But becoming a doctor in the US costs what in these times? $500,000? More, less, doesn't matter. Lots of money.
Money that most of them didn't have before.
Ofc they pay it/borrow it expecting material returns, not following their high ethos.Edited by pcfoo - 3/27/14 at 11:14am
