I've got an old Acer that's been heavily used (50-100% CPU almost 16+ hours/day) and possibly operating with the CPU at over 100c, and it still runs just fine.
Pre built machines aren't always bad. it depends on the manufacturer and model.
I would never buy a Dell after the experiences I've had with them, though.
Whoever thought it was a good idea to make multiple machines with different hardware with the same model number needs to get fired.
As of right now, I would be willing to purchase another Acer if I didn't feel like ordering parts instead, and didn't care about savings but I would at least want a look at the insides before just to see if there's any silly crap like you've got going on in there. I'd go with Acer again but wouldn't blindly trust them or any other brand.
As for the exposed slot... do you have small pets or anything? Could that slot potentially protect your PC from something stupid like spilled liquids splashing in through the back? If you're worried about something getting in through that slot.. cover it. If not, forget about it. I've had the slots off in my PC for years with no trouble.
