Is EK Supremacy an overkill for i5-4670K?

Hello again,

Question is posted in title. I'm going to make my first WC loop and was aiming at EK Supremacy, but then I thought - isn't it an overkill?
I mean, my mediocre AC cooler can cope with i5@4.5@1.28v just fine - around 70*C in typical usage [games, Photoshop and such]
I know that cooler is better [that's why I'm going for WC], but still... : P

Replies, suggestions and such are more than welcome!

Have you ran a 4670K at 1.28V before? Delidded? You won't see max temps from games, if you want to know how hot the chip can really get, run Prime95 or AIDA64 for an hour or two. As for the EK Supremacy, it'll only be as good/overkill as the rest of your loop, the CPU block is just a block, by itself it won't cool anything.

Watercooling in general is overkill. We take perfectly usable air-cooled computers and make them twice as expensive by watercooling them. My friends and family have no idea why I do it when I tell them about it. tongue.gif

But the EK-Supremacy block by itself is not overkill by watercooling standards. It is a pretty typical waterblock.

i aways have to explain to people that it's a hobby very similar to being a car enthusiast. a geo will get you where you need to go but wouldn't you rather drive one of these?

Yes I did. Not delidded, I know, I have around 80*C in Prime. Tho it's stable on Prime with 1.26v, I need to add more to get stability in everyday usage - I had same thing with i5-2500K. Need less voltage under full load than in lesser/mixed load. Maybe it's my PSU screwing?

Thanks! That's going to be REALLY useful! biggrin.gif

When I wrote about overkill, I meant that i5 isn't really a hot chip. It's not like i7 or AMD FX series. smile.gif

Its not perfectly usable on air in every situation. I don't want a jet engine next to my ear when im playing BF4 or mining. With wc i have a massive OC potential on my GPU and CPU while the noise level is mere hum. Its really about noise control.

Back to OPs question, id get the EK if you have the money. You can use the block on many other sockets and it will stick around for future to come.
