the best 290, imo, is the Tri-X. not as good as my watercooled reference but good enough.biggrin.gif

780. i read the classified or the lightning is good.

edit: 550 maybe cutting it, though, so i recommend the 780.

btw, the 290 is about equal to crossfired 7870s.

It doesn't say you'll be using OpenCL applications so GTX 780 is going to have more thermal headroom on air & will be quieter.

Given the choice between a GTX 780 Classified /Lightning over a R9 290 other than the Lightning, you're likely better off with the GTX 780.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130943
EVGA Classified is $509.99 after rebate, but that's not using the 10% V.Me code

The stock GTX 780 is Green-lighted so that's another story. (NVIDIA will check design meets their requirements)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202080
Sapphire Tri-X is $495...

http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=93761&vpn=AXR9%20290%204GBD5-PPDHE&manufacture=PowerColor&promoid=1020
PCS+ is $520

The MSI Gaming card is going to be ~ $470 http://www.microcenter.com/product/429293/R9290_Gaming_4G_AMD_R9_290_4GB_PCIe_x_16_30_Video_Card , http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Computer-Corp-290-GAMING/dp/B00HPS4AFG/ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127774 is OOS)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150697
XFX R9 290 is cheaper ~ $440 , the cooler isn't as terrible as the one on Tahiti but it isn't spectacular

If you are looking at the R9 290 expect prices to drop sharply after April 15th when people need to submit taxes on their crypto.

The aftermarket cooled R9 290s are hitting < $450 now.

op has a 550W psu. not recommended for the 290 but will work for the 780.
