Not sure if you can with that case but it would be a good idea to add some fans to blow over the HDDs since you are filling it up.

Yup, just saw that after the page loaded. Had your thread open for a while and didn't refresh. Whoops!

I'll be buying a 4 pack of Coolermaster fans (just the cheap ones that are quiet). So yeah. I forgot to mention that in the OP parts list.

The i3 will work for a basic server, I've used a i3-2100 in a media server and its runs fine.

Windows 7 won't run as a standalone server natively, you can of course do local sharing, but it will need additional software to operate as real FTP server. Easiest way I can think of without getting your own domain and dedicated website is to use something like Filezilla for remote file access, which runs quite well on Windows, you just need the client software on the remote computer and external IP address for your internet connection.

Thats exactly what I had in mind. Windows 7 with passworded user accounts, I can easily set permissions, and filezilla for ftp.

If my finalized parts list (plus fans and fan adapters) is okay I'll be ordering now. smile.gif

Have you thought about a dynamic dns service so you don't have to worry about your external IP changing? Just remember your host name and you're good to go. I use No-IP's free service and it works fine. You just have re verify your account each month otherwise they turn it off.

If you have a router that supports DD-WRT you can setup the service there or in within Windows. I think there's a program for that but I don't know the name.

I'm more worried about local stuff first. I have used NO-IP's free service in the past. I wasn't sure how the whole "update it every month" thing worked, and I eventually forgot, lol.

My current 2x2TB WD Green drives (both full) are failing. XBMC keeps buffering, and that's the only thing I can think of is my WD Green drives. That's why I want to build this server.

I got antsy. sozo.gif

Just bought the following:
8x Toshiba 3TB hard drives
Adaptec 5805 SAS card with battery and cables
Gigabyte H61 motherboard
2600k (will be using my old i3 for this)
Antec VP-450
Molex to SATA adapters
Fans + fan adapters
NZXT Source 210
8GB Hyper X DDR3-1600
Coolermaster Hyper 212+ Evo (for my new 2600k)
TP Link 8 port unmanaged gigabit switch

And I'm sure I missed a thing or two in that list, but I don't care. My wallet is now $1600 in the hole. Le sigh. rolleyes.gif

Filezilla supports sftp natively. You just specify port 22 when logging in otherwise it will default to port 21 using ftp.
