I cant get my hands on a 290X Lightning so i'm looking for something else to play with. Can get a barely used one for 579. Should i buy?

As long as the warranty transfers you should be fine.
The Lightning is over built and should provide nice overclocking headroom.
760 is a long step down

Still it only has 2 GIG of VRAM where the 290X has 4 and modern titles are using more ram all the time

I would go with the r9-290x no contest. Not SLI and less hassle plus it should overclock well.
