PowerColor PCS+ AXR9 290?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131549

This is the highest-clocked R9 290 that Newegg has in their inventory. Is there any reason why I shouldn't consider buying it?

(I would much rather not do any of my own GPU overclocking)

idk about warranty but ive heard good things and bad .. i personally own the 5850 PCS+ and 7950 PCS+ and have had no problems with the cards whatsoever. go for it
post #3 of 12
I'm a long time powercolor customer, having owned around 8 or their cards or so... 2 of which being my pcs+ 7950's.
During that time I only had one that had any issues... which gave me a chance to deal with their RMA service and I really can't say anything bad.
Applied for the RMA that took maybe 2 days to be approved...
Sent the card back on the monday, got confirmation it arrived by the next monday, they sent a replacement on the tuesday... got the new card back on the monday..
Going from Australia to hong kong, being stopped at customs along the way, arriving, go back through customs again to arrive back at my door in 14 days.. rather amazing actually.

As for the cards.... great... especially the pcs+ coolers, even in cfx I'm still yet to see either of my cards go over 80c unless its summer and the room temp exceeds 45c...damn Australia...

And for what I hear about the 290x pcs+ its just about the cream of the crop also.

Huh. Well, then I see no good reason to avoid it. Do you remember any of the bad things that you heard about it by chance?

Life in Australia... you get use to it... heat and inflated prices lol.

It was a 6870x2 (notorious for messing up regardless of manufacturer)
About a year after I got it one core started having heat issues,it was hitting almost 100c while the other was at 67c-70c..
BUT only in furmark, still ran fine in bf3/metro etc that core would only be 10-12c over the other.
... but I figured I would get it fixed while still in warranty, but instead of fixing it they sent me a new one..which is never bad biggrin.gif

Wow. Yeah, I suppose you would get used to it. It's like how living in Minnesota you get used to the stupid weather that we have here. lol Still, 45 and higher. Omg. lol

Anyway, well now I'm torn between the PCS+ AXR9 290 and the Tri-X 290. Argh. lol I have a couple of months to decide though.

From user results I've seen here, the tri-x will bench higher if both are clocked the same but the PowerColor will stay cooler. I haven't benched my 290x PCS+ yet though, just got it this week.

Don't get any PCS+ Hawaii cards right now. There are some batches that are suffering performance issues, and unless you want an underperforming card, the Tri-X is the better buy. Although the PCS+ cooler is the best cooler available for Hawaii (Better than Lightning), it's not really worth it unless the card actually performs right. I have 2x PCS+ 290Xs that perform clock for clock worse than 290s, and a few others have had the same problems on their 290Xs and PCS+ 290s.

While some PCS+ cards perform as intended, I wouldn't take the risk right now. Since you said that you have a couple months, just wait. The cards will only get cheaper, and PowerColor will most likely sort out these issues by then. Hopefully. Also, since Club3D is on Newegg now, their RoyalAce 290/x, which is basically the PCS+ with a different shroud, may be worth looking at. Although PowerColor and Club3D (and VTX3D) are apart of TUL, they may handle QC and whatnot differently, so the other sub-vendors may not have the same problems that PowerColor is having with their current PCS+ lineup.

Interesting. This goes right in line with what airisom2 just said.

Same site, same methodology both cards you are considering.

I'm not looking at the 290X though.
