5870 Upgrade for ~$300

Thread Starter

My 5870 is starting to show is abuse and even under water  it's artifacting and dying. What could can I get for around $300 that's a good upgrade and can be water cooled? I'm fine with used.

I need it to have 2x DVI and 1x DP. Don't care red or green. I was thinking GTX 670/680 or ATI 7970. Any suggestions?

Edit: Let me restate. I'm looking to get a block and card for around $300. So i'm probably going last gen and used. What cards should I look into?

Agreed. The GTX 760 is the way to go in that price bracket. If you can push a little bit more cash into your purchase, the GTX 770 is the leader for sure. If you cannot, get the GTX 760.

This is the one I would get if it was me.

If it's going under water, you can grab a ref PNY 760 for 230 after MIR: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133492

If you opt to go used, you can find 680s ~$250 as well.

i don't think the 570 is an upgrade to the 5870. the 7970 is. the 7970 is about equal to 2 570s.

edit: btw, there are hardly a 7970 now. they are now 280X. there is a 280 the just came out which a rebadge 7950. it is faster than a 760. about 2 5870s.

I've been looking used hoping to score a block and card combo. I definitely do want to add a water block in the future. But I really can't afford much over $300 which is why I was looking used.

Totally meant to say 670. I've been out of the loop for GPU's for the last 2-3 years. But i'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the info.

Do you know of any blocks that fit it?

How do the 760 and the 680 compare to each other?

I would consider a R9 280, Though kinda sad you could pick up used 7950's for under 200 bucks before the mining craze. Faster then the GTX760 if you are going to overclock, else they go back and forth.

Finding a waterblock for the 280 shouldn't be a problem.

Can't help you with the blocks, but a 680 is a much stronger card. For all intents and purposes the GTX 770 is a rebrand of the 680 with a stock clock bump.

if watercooling is a must look for the best deal on a used ref GTX 680 and ref HD 7970. get the cheaper of the two. if quiet operation alone is needed get a good aftermarket R9 280 / R9 280X / GTX 770. go for the lowest price below usd 300
