i7-920 too outdated to game? - Page 2

I would get an X5660 or X5650 any day over an i7 920

I was going to get a X5650 for my x58 board, but a friend of mine upgrading to a 4770k offered to trade me his 2600k for my i7 920 + some cash. Just need to toss it in my rig. Wanted the higher single thread performance anyways, but would have liked a go with a x5650 even if it was just to test an OC.

A 4.2ghz X5650 will beat a 4770K 4.8ghz in Cinebench. It doesn't need to be taken to extreme speeds.

4.2ghz X5650 - 10.96
4.8ghz 4770K - 10.58

Thread Starter
x58 motherboard prices are ridiculous! I'm having a hard time finding a working one on ebay for less than $150. Those xeons are interesting, I was been wondering about the feasibility of using old high end CPUs, that's a fascinating thread, OCmember.

I sounded really cynical, but I have a w3520 just sitting in my room, and I thought for $20 for something that's pretty much an i7 920 I could do a pretty sweet low budget rig.

Haha then I found out how much x58 boards cost. Haha

I'd still do an x58 build, but the only reason would be to use the 6 core xeons.

Quad Core Bloomfields are cheap but the motherboards are a bit expensive. i7 920 @ 4 GHz will definitely be an upgrade from a Phenom II X4 even at 4.3 GHz. In games that are not multi-threaded well you might see some improvements if you are using a recent card.
But I think the PII X4 is enough to push the 460 so you might see no improvements in games as in most cases you will be GPU limited anyway.

Edit : I agree with other members though as trying to find a cheap X5650 which has more cores and will be better than the 920.
