I'm trying to find some games with the following qualities I believe make them great regardless of their setting in time (past/present/future), place, or theme.
1. The main characters must be genuine and likable or feel like a true enemy. They have depth and are there for more than the purpose of driving the story forward.
2. The story must be something that I want to see what happens next, not feel like I'm being told to do everything. I want to do it.
3. Setting is not tossed together without thought. Detail, history, and overall environment. Why am I even there? When is it (past/present/future)? How did the world become the way it is? These are very impotent details allot of games lack, or press too hard into your face. What's wrong with leaving something unsaid or unexplained, only for you to later find out, or maybe never?

Here is my list of games I felt met these expectations of what makes a game worthy of being called great.
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts 1/2
Bioshock series
Metro series
Mafia II
The Elder Scrolls series
Alan Wake
Fallout series

I am curious what else everyone else would consider to be a Great game and why.

I can't believe that no one other than boredgunner and End3r mentioned Mass Effect or pointed out what an extraordinary game trilogy it is...perhaps the best of all time, especially when played back to back and transferring the same character from one installment to the next. How many other games can you achieve that level of continuity with ? None. Furthermore, I can't believe that I'm the first person to mention Half Life 2, Crysis 1 or the Dead Space Series.

My list:

Mass Effect Series
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Clear Sky, Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat
Bioshock Series
Dragon Age 1 and 2
Half Life 2
Deus Ex Human Revolution
Crysis 1
Dead Space Series
Dishonored
Fallout 3 and New Vegas
Far Cry 3
GTA IV
Mafia 2
Metro 2033 and Last Light
The Elder Scrolls Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim

and a very much overlooked game called Divinity 2: Developers Cut, which I enjoyed very much.

Well you got me there...

I'll put on my flame suit now, but Kingdom Hearts is IMHO about the stupidest game concept ever. I played maybe 10 hours of KH1, and it was just asinine. Sorry folks, the FF universe and Disney universe just do NOT go together. You can't just smash two completely different media concepts into one because they are both "popular" and expect a coherent result. The Square characters are out of place in the Disney universe, and the Disney characters are wildly uncharacteristic of themselves. It's just terrible.

If that makes sense, my not mix The Elder Scrolls with the Warner Brothers universe? Why not have Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck wandering around Skyrim or whatever? Because it would be fricking stupid, that's why!!! But hey, maybe we should have been doing this in the 80s, some dying RPG franchises might have survived...Ultima + Care Bears? Wizardry + My Pretty Pony? The Bard's Tale + Hello Kitty? tongue.gif

Obviously Kingdom Hearts has its devoted fans...more power to you. Different strokes. But man, I've played just about every type of game there is, and I just don't get this one.

At the time I was maybe 12 years old when KH came out which is probably why I liked it. I don't remember that much about the game to be honest. Just that it was very similar to FFX which is my all time favorite game story.

You don't have to justify what games you like/have liked. People look for different things from gaming and from individual games. Usually when complaints are based on a game's concept, it's because that person was not looking for that time of gaming experience. Whether they ever look for such an experience determines one's tastes. You can have a wide range of game styles that you enjoy, though some (not necessarily here) believe that types progress linearly. This suggests that your tastes must progress and mature, as if there's a "right" type of game you should like, which is silly.

Loved Mass Effect, but I think less than you. And I already had two BioWare RPGs on my list, I figured that was enough. (And I consider them both superior to Mass Effect.)

Baldur's Gate.

Bioshock Series

Ah, I missed this one...I couldn't think of an FPS I wanted to add, but Bioshock 1 is definitely the one for the list. I loved Bio2 as well, but it was inferior to Bio1; and Infinite...well, it's good but it's just not the same game.

Deus Ex Human Revolution

But not the original? That's odd...did you play it? The original was far superior IMHO, if dated at this point.

Am I missing something ? I thought Baldur's Gate was just 1 game. In Mass Effect, you can take the entire file from say...your 'Engineer Shepard' in ME 1 and carry over that characters entire story into ME 2, add to the story and then onto ME 3. i.e. if you killed Urdnot Wrex in ME 1, he stays dead in ME 2 and 3 etc.

No, Infinite is not the same game but don't we get enough of studios rehashing the same game over and over with CoD/MoH ? I'm glad they did something fresh and different myself.

Unfortunately, I never played Deus Ex 1 even though I have it. It's just too 'dated' for me at this point and I just can't stay interested in it but that's my fault, not the games. If I had played it back in the day, I'm sure I would see it differently.

and don't be afraid to take a look at Divinity 2: Developers Cut. It's a really good and often overlooked game at an affordable price.

When I first heard of Kingdom Hearts, I was right there with you, I was like Disney and Square ? *** BULL CRAP IS THIS. But if you let go of the whole "this isn't in their character, or they are out of place" it's extremely fun. Basically I look at it as an entirely different universe. You love Bioshock Infinite right, well think of it like that... Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
there are an infinite number of possibilities, worlds where you exist and make different decisions, well the whole KH universe is about moving in and out of worlds, who's to say it's the same world that was in the FF game or Disney movie, it's just enough like it that you can recognize the characters/setting.

Basically, all I'm saying is that I totally agreed with you, until I played it. The story of the KH characters (not Disney or Square entirely) is actually pretty good, and the gameplay is fun, I think that's why the series took off the way it did, because despite everything in my gaming bones telling me to hate the game, I couldn't.

No, not one game. BG1 plus its expansion were all the same character. And then you could import your character into BG2 (which was something like four times the size of BG1), and its expansion continued on after the end of BG2. Some of the characters stuck around from BG1 into BG2, including one of the most memorable characters in all of gaming history (a semi-crazy warrior named Minsk). And as mentioned earlier, if you play the entire thing, you go from a level 1 nobody to (literally) a god....epic fantasy.

I would like to thank all the console players for beta-testing GTA V before the master race starts playing it! :p

I liked Deus Ex: Human Revolution but the graphics were a little wonky for me. Normal situations indoors are very bright, and in cutscenes it's super dark. Gunplay could use some work.

Reminds me, time to play Bioshock Infinite, I heard that's good.
