DO I have a CPU bottleneck

Thread Starter
okay, I haven't been keeping up with CPUs for the past couple of years.

Now that that is out of the way, I have a dumb question.

I have a computer with an AMD Phenom ii (I know, its kinda old) 970 over clocked to 4 ghz. I have win7 with 8 gb ram and I just bought a R9270.

I am not seeing any noticeable difference from my older 6850. I was just wondering if it could be the CPU holding it back? From benchmarking, Im getting about 40 FPS at 1920x1080.

If so, what should I look into upgrading to? 8350?

I have an AM3 mobo and don't want to buy a new one.

You didnt tell us what you are benching to begin with.

a 4ghz 970 is actually quite decent. although its not going to tip the scales into a gpu bottleneck scenario where you would notice the increase.

Do you notice anything outside of benching, in perhaps a game?

970 is going to get murdered in games like BF4 Multiplayer.

I downloaded the heaven benchmark. I just got the new card so I haven't really played games on it, except SWTOR, which was good. I did notice better graphics.

I mainly upgraded for ESO, which comes out on Sunday. I don't really play FPS on PC. I mainly use my computer for MMOs and I play most otter games on my XB1.

I guess eso won't be taxing my system too much but I felt I had to ask. I built this rig about 2.5 years ago.

BTW, I oc'd the graphics card to 1050 from the 975 out of the box. I also OC's the CPU from 3.5 to 4.

My would kill me if I spent too much money upgrading but a gamers gotta do what a gamers gotta do. But if I don't really have to then that would be great.

New MMO's are going to be really CPU dependant as well.

BF4 multiplayer isnt bad at all on my 5800K, with 4GB of ram, you just cant expect to jack your settings up.

I can see it getting choppy mainly in heavily populated area's. I dont have experience playing any MMO's but I have done a short amount of research when doing budget builds for my friends and other clientele.

i play BF4 MP64 with my Phenom Quad at 4GHz just fine. although it is with a slower HD7770, the 6850 should handle higher than my settings of 1080 Medium . . .

Heck even 3.8GHz works fine.

@op, run a bench like 3DMark11 please.

I would disagree.

Might not be the best but should do perfectly fine. Just as good if not better then a i3 3220 TBH. Just make sure you have 8gb of ram for BF4, as 4gb isn't enough. As my Brother with 4gb was having massive frame drops in BF4, but 8gb is smooth. This is with a i3 3220 and a HD 5870. The AMD might not have as much single thread strength but will have a fair amount more multithread performance for games like BF4 to play without problems.

In all Honesty you didn't do that big of a upgrade so you may not feel it as much, though I would bet that there is still a decent improvement. Especially if you start overclocking.

Also I would try Mantle with your new card, will remove all CPU limitations.

Yeah but he wont be playing BF4 from what I gather. BF4 is really a worst case scenario. I think you will be fine. Its just not the best.
As for ESO I played the beta on a Q6600 OC at 3.2 and a gtx 260 core 216 1080p medium setting without any problems.

My bet with what you got ... You will be more than fine.

/Edit I didn't do mass pvp with fortress and everything tho.
