Antec HCG 620 watt enough for R9 280x crossfire?

Hey guys just wondering if my current PSU (in title) would be enough to handle R9 280x's in Crossfire?

Rest of my system is:

Antec DF-30 Gaming Case (5 fans in total)
ASUS P8H67-M Pro Mobo (PCIE 2.0 16x/4x in crossfire)
1 x Gigabyte R9 280x Rev 2.0 (1100/1500/1631v stock) / (1100/1500/1095v modded bios)
Intel I5 2400 3.1Ghz (3.4 in turbo mode)
OCZ 60 GB SSD
LG DVD/RW Drive (not currently in use)
Samsung 2GB Green Drive

I am willing to sacrafice clocks/memory/voltage to reduce power consumption so hopefully my current PSU ends up being enough.

Also as a side note. Would it even be worth it? Given the second PCIE slot is 4x 2.0?

PS: I did have two 6950s flashed to 6970s OC'd to 925-950/1375/1225v (depending on game/bench) with no issues.

Keep them both at stock, and you'll have just enough power.

 

I don't know whether or not it will be worth it. That's out of my league.

You mean the stock clocks of 1100/1500?

Surely since I've undervolted that should save some power?

Buggered if I know how much though. I know my temps are around 66c full load now and at the stock 1631v they were around 69-71c.

I've read that a 7970 in PCIE 2.0 at 4x speed loses around 5-10% for most games. I'm willing to live with that.

I just mean, stock clocks and stock voltages. Of course, undervolting will reduce the power consumption. :)

I highly doubt it will handle it.

Each r9 280X can draw up to 300W peak load under stress (see http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/R9_280X_Direct_Cu_II_TOP/24.html), the i5-2400 is going to be ~100W

So even if you aren't overclocking/stressing the GPU you're looking at ~ 500W

Assuming you're using this PSU:

It's going to have 576W on +12V , that's cutting it real close

When in any real-world situation would anyone cause the 280X and the i5-2400 to be under absolutely full load simultaneously? Not unless you are putting some serious effort into it with special benchmarking software.

With one R9 280X under full load in their system, their PSU pulled 352W from the wall outlet. They calculated from this that the 280X itself pulled 243W from the PSU. So, adding 245W to 352W for adding in another 280X brings the power consumption to 597W. Then, adding 95W for the i5-2400 brings it to 692W. This means that if the PSU is 85% efficient while pulling 692W from the wall, then the computer is pulling 588W from the PSU. Then, while gaming, the power consumption will be even lower, never exceeding about 550W. Not all of this is on 12V power. So again, it will be just enough. I never said that it would be plenty, or more than enough. I said it would be just enough. It means, he can upgrade if he wants to, but he can also see how it goes. He doesn't have a dangerous PSU to play with here.

I was not refuting what you wrote (please don't take it like that) ; benchmarks are very different than gaming loads.

It just has barely any leeway to play with voltage or account for additional fans and whatnot.

The Guru3D review's test setup is a Corsair AX1200i so it's above 85% efficiency , once it hits ~280W DC load it has 90-92% efficiency.

I had two 660ti on a seasonic 620 watt. The Msi PE/OC models claim they use 180watts instead of the reference 150watts. Anyways I could not over volts the cards at all. Even setting the CPU to stock there still was not enough headroom to overclock/overvolt.

I think two 280X will be way , way , too much power draw. Good Luck though.

Because the cpu uses very little power, I think you'll be ok running two 280x gpus on the HCG 620 possibly with the advertised stock clocks, but definitely with the lowered voltage modded bios.
