Looking to build a server.

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I'm looking to build a server that will be used to store work documents, and stream 1080p media to 2-3 devices. Any suggestions on hardware? I'm pretty lost outside of gaming hardware rolleyes.gif . The case i am going to use is the secondary case that comes with the Cooler Master Haf X Stacker. (Mini-ITX) All suggestions are appreciated! Thanks biggrin.gif

The biggest thing is going to be budget. You can use standard desktop parts for a server, it just may not last as long or be as reliable.

But here is mine to maybe give you some ideas:

Ok, i have a budget of about 400 bucks before the case. I'm looking to have about 4-5 TB of storage also.

Possible parts:

CPU: AMD A4-6300 $55
MB: Biostar A85S3 FM2 Mini-ITX $65 (on sale at Newegg right now)
Memory: G.Skill X-series 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600 $46
Storage Drive: WD RED or Seagate NAS 4TB $190
OS Drive: Mushkin Chronos MKNSSDCR60GB-7 60GB SSD $50 (on sale at Newegg right now)
PSU: Corsair CX430 430W $40 (onsale at Newegg)

Total: $446 before tax and shipping

This should work for the basics. I would recommend trying to increase the budget a bit to do server grade parts for the CPU, MB and Memory. If you do server grade parts then I'd go with something like a Supermicro Dual Lan LGA1150 board with a Intel i3-1220v3, and ECC Memory. It'll probably cost about $300 over what is above but it'll be a real server setup not server software running on gaming parts.

A great foundation for a business server is the Lenovo TS140. They're so good, buying 1 turned into buying 3 of them! They're $299 & up on Amazon and who knows what deals can be had elsewhere. I bought a $399 one with a HDD and 8 GB of ECC RAM. Only after did I notice there were other models for sub $300 (4GB ECC RAM and no HDD).

TS140 #1 was supposed to be the new shipping computer. But I stole it to move our "old raid" into. (write up)
TS140 #2 is now the shipping computer & running Win7x64.
TS140 #3 is the ready spare for the next time one of our "consumer build" PCs takes a dump on me.

Seriously, I'll only buy business class computers for my workplace. No more home grown "oh let's build it for less" and end up with a computer like my old raid was that started random kernel panics. :/

I didn't know about ECC RAM until recently... If the data on the drives is business data, it's only getting ECC RAM.
