what would you tell them?

Thread Starter
what would you say to someone that said this?

"I'm considering overclocking my Radeon 7850 Core Edition (1 GB DDR5) since I can usually run BF4 on High-Ultra (depends on level/amount of "activity") but I want to push it Ultra without needing to adjust it every so often (and I can run all-Ultra some, but not all of the time).

Other Info:
AMD FX8350
Antec 500 Watt Power Supply
MSI 970A-G46 Motherboard*
8 GB RAM (Corsair Vengeance, 1 Stick)

This motherboard only has PCI 2.0, which makes me wonder if it's bottlenecking my GPU and/or if it will when overclocking."

someone posted this on a FB group im in and im wondering this question myself

what i would say, is that the CPU is being bottle necked by the GPU (i saw some benchmarks a while back regarding BF4 and VRAM, with the vram hitting peaks of over 1gb constantly, (but not close to 2gb)

so, i think, even if this person OC'ed, it wouldnt increase performance, since its taking ram from system ram.

am i wrong? (i think i am wrong biggrin.gif lol)

PCI 2.0 x16 is not an issue as even an GTX 780 Ti can't saturate it.

Overclocked or not an 7850 isn't really fast enough to run BF4 on ultra and the 1GB vram is a define limitation. For someone using that card I would strongly recommend only using shader based AA like FXAA, run low or no ambient occlusion and really stick to mostly high settings as Ultra settings are in general are less optimized and more just there to squeeze out the last bit of fidelity that can be had if one is running high end cards. If vram is still running out then dropping textures down one step more is a sure fire way to free up more space.

As for the FX-8350 well when running that CPU has been noted that there is sometimes frame drops. You can blame it on shoddy coding or whatever but the fact remains that when lots of stuff is happening in BF4 it puts considerable load on the CPU and if the CPU can't deliver the FPS drops. This does holds true for pretty high ends CPU's too like 3770k ect. not just AMD stuff but naturally faster CPU's cope better then slower ones.

.

yeah i kinda figured on this also, remember reading something like this somewhere long time ago

EDIT: so basically,
1) PCI 2.0 is not an issue, even highest end GPU atm cant saturate it
2)even if OC'ed the gpu will have issues
3)1gb vram is an issue

correct?

A 7850 can run BF4 fine.... as long as its the 2GB version.

It'll increase performance right up until it runs out of VRAM.

that means that performance will increase (due to faster GPU core clock), up to the point of hitting VRAM speeds of 1GB correct?

Its not that OC'ing doesn't help but its not some magic bullet. Even with an aggressive OC you'd be looking at an 18% improvement at the very best (usually you end up with less). To put that in to perspective if you are getting 45FPS then an 18% improvement would get you up to 53FPS.

But thats assuming you don't run out of vram. When vram runs out textures have to be swapped between the cards vram and the main system memory and this causes frame drops so even if you otherwise can run the game at 50FPS you will get seemingly random drops if you are running out of vram.

By far the thing that takes up the most vram is textures, followed by raster AA (MSAA ect), shadow resolution, ambient occlusion, rendering resolution ect.

Overclocking won't help with vram related performance issues but as long as the settings are setup so you stay under the limit OC'ing will improve FPS.

OK lets say he is getting 45FPS with drop in to 20's every now and again when running Ultra textures.

If he overclocks he would get 53FPS but still suffer drops in to the 20's as that turned out the be vram related.

If he was running stock with High textures then he would get 48FPS with drops that only go down to mid 30's as hes no longer running out of varm

Then if he overclocked he would get 55FPS and also see an equal improvement in the drops only dipping down to say ~40

Now keep in mind that's a random example and not what the FPS is really like with an 7850.
