The best product available is a company's flagship. There could be a slight grey area in the weeks before the launch of the next flagship, but the 680 was out for a lot longer than that.

Now this guy knows what he is talking about.

There are some games the 290x does indeed win but the overall average goes to the Ti.

Just like the 680 vs 7970..the 680 has shown its age with a 256 bus and 2GB, the 780TI vs 290x will be no different by Q3 Q4 this year. 290x has more vram, wider bus and 64 ROP, some games favour Nvidia other AMD. I haven't seen anything the suggests theres a clear winner when comparing these two card. I bought my 780TI because it was cheaper than the 290x at the time.

How does this same tired semantics argument pop up every time people discuss the 600 series? The GK104 was sold as a flagship, but was/is a mid-range die in the Kepler generation. Can we move on?

Doubtful. Bus-width is only 1/2 of the equation, the 780 Ti actually has more memory bandwidth thanks to its faster RAM, and 3GB isn't proving to be a limiting factor outside of surround/4K with excessive AA applied. As for the Ti being faster... Anand, TPU, Hard, Guru3D and even our own OCN bench offs have come to the same conclusion regarding the Ti vs the X, so I'm not sure where you're looking. redface.gif

There is not a clear winner because the 290x is indeed a formidable opponent.

Still, the Ti wins more than it loses.

And the memory comparison is only valid on size. Bandwidth between the Ti and 290x is a lot closer than 7970/680 ever was.

Unless someone is using ridiculous amounts of AA, memory size isn't a factor. But I guess we could keep getting more and more unoptimized games like Titanfall but that's hurting the vast majority of PC gamers which reside in the $150 card range and only have 1-2 gb as well so it's not likely.

And if I'm wrong.....then I'll buy a new card. biggrin.gif

680 vs 7970 also isn't really comparable to GK110 vs. hawaii because this time it's the Nvidia GPUs that have much more OCing headroom and will pull ahead once in the hands of an enthusiast.

Alatar you forgot to state in some scenarios since the above is not at all fact. Yes they OC better but for mutli gpu and high res the card of choice is clearly the R9 290X the 780Ti is for everything else for people not on a budget.

Maybe this will force AMD to do something similar with its drivers or expand Mantle beyond CGN, preferably the first.

how about this. 7970 was amds low end and now since hawaii is smaller than gk110 its their midrange part matching or beating nvidias enthusiast product. biggrin.gif
