So it's not a huge problem at this point for these companies. If 100% of users applied adblock software? Well then it would be a problem. And we would see a paradigm shift towards more paywalls. Think of it this way. Most of the information on the internet is free, and there are a few payblocks for services. This forum is free. Most tech sites are free. So on and so forth. Without advertisements being effective, that could change the paradigm.
But like I said, it just isn't a problem yet. Most folks do not use adblock software. Well - most "out of the loop" people (which is the majority) do not use adblock software. And adblock software doesn't exist to the same extent on mobile devices, so that's another factor.
You say that like the only options are complete tracking of your online behavior to serve you ads or no ad supported sites and services at all.
There is a middle ground which does NOT involve hoovering up everything you do on the web.
There are tools you can install and use to see how you are being tracked across the web. Try it yourself and see just how invasive and insidious it is. We can have ad supported web sites and web services without all the data mining. The one does not require the other.
EDIT: In light of all the governmental spying that is going on where our records are being intercepted both with and without tech companies complicity, it is really galling that Carmack would say he "can't get that worked up about it" and "I rather like the recommendations that Amazon gives me on each visit. Educate me. What terrible outcome is expected from this?" see especially galling.Edited by Mygaffer - 3/30/14 at 11:55pm
