custom loop with... car cooler liquid

Possible? I really wonder how it would work, car cooler and liquid cooler for cpu works the same anyway. Wonder if it fits then what's the performance of such thingie.

They don't work at the same temperature. The car coolant is made to operate at around 100C while your computer work at around 30C. That is why we usually use water as it is one of the best coolant to transfer heat.

it will work, but the question is, why? plain water is more effective than coolant/antifreeze.

i was wondering if car coolant have better heat transferability than typical pc coolants
post #5 of 13
Car coolant has alcohol in it to keep it from freezing and will actually yield worse results than just water for a watercooling loop.

no. water by itself is better than when you mix it with additives like antifreeze, corrosion inhibitor, etc.

You can look here to find the heat capacity (quantity of heat needed to raise one kg of 1 degree) of many fluid and you will see that the water have one of the highest.

Also car coolant containing alcohols can crank components like acrylic if it isn't diluted enough. There really is just no good reason to use car coolant when DI water is so cheap in comparison.

In the last decade of WCing, automotive coolants were heavily used. Why? Because most of the RADs available were aluminum and the waterblocks copper. Thus, the galvanic corrosion had to be prevented.

Now, if you run a 50/50 auto coolant in your loop there is a wee chance that the acrylic would have issues. More likely the adhesive that bonds the acrylic really. Don't get too spooked by alcohol when there are color additives people are using in their loops that have a similar harshness. So, got a good tubing that is resistant to fuels? check. Metal blocks and RAD? check. a Laing pump DDC or D-series? check. Then you are good to use a broader range of mixtures if needed.

There is an alternative coolant in automotive called Propylene Glycol. If has the same corrosion inhibitors for a mixed metal loop and since it has a slipperiness to it, the pump is lubricated as well. But, you are only looking at 33% for mixed metal mixture or a mere 10% for common compatible metal mixture.

Water on this planet is the idea coolant of choice. Use only distill and flush the loop after the first 500hrs. This way any nasties in the components can be dumped. The 10% PG coolant helps the pump, is pet safe and will not attack the acrylic bonding adhesive.

Car coolant has excessive corrosion inhibitors, and lots of either propylene glycol or ethylene glycol with ethanol to both decrease it's freezing temperature and increase it's boiling temperature. This is great for cars, but will yield poor results for computer cooling. A vehicles cooling system is designed to operate at 80c - 110c. If your loops coolant EVER gets that hot you have a serious problem. So you could but it would be stupid with modern coolants with corrosion inhibitors out there, as the only pro it offers is excessive corrosion inhibitors, with MANY cons such as possibility of damaging acrylic, decreased thermal capacity, increased viscosity, and possible toxicity.

So yeah, it's a bad idea. Use pure distilled water with some sort of biocide like PT Nuke PHN or a coolant designed for PC cooling w/corrosion inhibitors.
