Ram amount and Ram speed.

i cant find a RAM section, so im posting here. (since its kinda like storage biggrin.gif)

I know that if you have a dedicated GPU, 1600mhz wont be bottle necking anything, and having 8gb is fine.

but if your using a iGPU, (from either an APU or from intel's HD graphics) (for like an HTPC build or a simple budget gaming pc)
does system ram speed matter? and also, does the AMOUNT of system ram matter also or just the speed?

hello,

No really your cpu is designed a little differently.

Think if it this way.....your cpu is a brain...but without memory , it really cant remember what it was doing....etc...

A gpu doesn't have this problem, it has its own brain, and usually now adays its own memory. It's dedicated on doing one thing...Bringing awesome graphics.....

Your cpu don't have this luxury...while your gpu is out partying it up , playing battlefield4, its busy wondering why the printer is out of black ink, or detecting wifi signals from space.

Your cpu is doing higher levels of thinking..but its from the upper east side, and your gpu is really from the ghetto.

You can buy the baddest igpu on a cpu , its not going to run battlefield 4....not even on the motherboard....there is not enough dedicated memory or understanding of the tech for todays games for this to happen.

I bet you think your cpu is a punk now huh? But ask your gpu to run battlefield 4 , 4 times , and the same time....your graphics card cant even understand how to open o the program without the cpu.why? Your cpu can multitask

Ram speed matters , don't get me wrong. But its more about running windows and all that.

Now if ya took the ram outta your computer......what would happen? Go ahead, check ....I'll wait... XD

I'm guessing that beeping sound isn't coming from your gpu.

So what am I basicly telling ya.? There is no such thing as a budget igpu that can run anything but facebbook type games. Because now adays. its really the cpu we are talking about, and it aint got no time for that biggrin.gif

even if ya have 32 gbs and a igpu , be it the board....its not going to have have the chip to run that type of stuff...or the dedicated memory ( not random access memory) to run it.

Oh, OK , let me dumb it down then... biggrin.gif

Yes it matters....but not for the igpu.

I have no idea what Whodat1972 is smoking hahaha

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I am quite drunk atm but: The AMOUNT of RAM used is a set amount dedicated to the iGPU, not shared meaning that adding more RAM won't give the iGPU more RAM, however the amount of RAM dedicated to the iGPU is normally configurable in BIOS. Increased RAM speeds will ofc usually improve the performance of iGPU based tasks such as games.

Also: the RAM section is called "Memory".

Ya, drunk or not, Bearybear is right here. When dealing with iGPU, faster ram is always better.

GPUs use a lot of memory all the time to store textures. Normally they have dedicated and faster GDDR. Its better for this application than standard DDR is, but also more expensive. In the case of APUs, the iGPU shares a portion of the system ram, and since it needs to dump and pull information often when gaming, faster is better.

Quantity wise, again more is better. Get at least 8GB. That way you can put at least 1.5 - 2GB for the iGPU.

To the point of iGPUs not being able to run anything, the new chips from AMD do quite well as long as you're not trying to run everything maxed out.

OMG, now your direct to me?
Its um, usually defined by the user. You can alter how much is used.

Back in the day, that was true....whatever ya just said....ok? *G*......But now you have Mantle and Lucid MVP pro.....

ya no what, I am just start giving 1 liners, seems to work for everyone else....

1. your IGPU has a set amount...set aside like ya said..it can be decreased mind ya...don't have to be in bios.

2. so aside of me smoking something was it? Back in the day , that's true...it what I was kinda saying...I dunno why I gotta be smoking something....with amd mantle, or both are being used...so its not even a proper question....all three can be used....

ram memory....igpu...gpu.....to work togeather...imagine what I'm smoking?

My one line answer is;

I would never use a IGPU for a "budget gaming computer"...yes the speed matters, and of course the amount...

So please, someone come back with " it really don't matter that much" , so we can all troll along?

I disagree. GPUs need memory, whether it's dedicated or shared.
