Massive price drop - Page 2

I'm pretty happy about this.thumbsupsmiley.png

I have seen a flux of 7970s for sale locally here, as low as $225, but mostly $300. They aren't moving quite that fast though, so let's drop the price some more!

The used cards seem to be coming onto the market and staying there a bit longer as all the bandwagon jumpers are jumping off.

I've been waiting for this. I don't "need: a new GPU, but oh boy do I "want" one.

Also the sharp decline in BTC price recently. There are a lot of contributing factors.

to be honest, i think you should sell the GPU, cuz the price point is already at the peak, theres no way that AMD gpu prices will increase more.

(unless, some unforseen events take place, like crytpocoins raising in demand, or all of a sudden for unknown reasons, GPU mining becomes better suited again)

In no particular order, the following things are making these cards less expensive now:

  • Temperatures in North America, where most crypto-currency mining takes place, are beginning to rise
  • The fall of Mount Gox shook the public's faith in Bitcoin's safety and longterm value. Whether or not this is warranted is irrelevant, it happened.
  • Nvidia's Maxwell architecture has been released and, if the 750ti is any indication of what it can do, AMD could be in trouble. The effect of this is that people are waiting to see what Maxwell can do at the high end and are buying less of any GPU
  • The IRS has declared Bitcoin a taxable asset, taking away some of its allure to those who would have it as an "off the grid" investment
  • Mining itself behaved in many ways like a fad. It was never going to last longterm as a mainstream concept. Sure, there will always be those who mine, but it's not going to be like it was
  • AMD/TSMC have fixed many of their supply issues, allowing them to bring cards to the market to meet what was pent-up demand
