Power of Opteron CPUs?

Thread Starter
Hey there, I've been thinking about using server processors for maximum power. Possibly dual or quad socket.

I wish to know what the relative performance of the Opteron 6386 SE ([16 cores]2.8, turbo 3.5ghz)/Opteron 6328([8 cores] 3.5ghz, 3.8 turbo). Is it comparable to say a xeon or a top of the line i7?
I want to do this because I very much like AMD and its business practices, and I wish to have a very high performance AMD build rather than having to slink over to intel.

I'm dearly sorry if this sounds like a silly question, I'm not very informed on the server CPU market, but I am very familiar with the desktop market, so I hope you can understand why I am asking this question. Please, I don't care about money nor practicality, I just wish maximum performance, and if AMD provides what I wish.

What are u going to be useing it for?

A ton of cores is only useful for highly threaded applications. Rendering, encoding, photo processing, BOINC, Folding, databases, etc.

We *might* see some new games start to use up to 8 cores because of the latest consoles.

That said, my next (non-gaming) system will have a minimum of 16 cores, probably more like 24 or 32 thumb.gif

Tons of stuff!

First thing I want to know is how good is it for gaming, but that isn't the only thing I will do. I will be rendering, programming, network testing, server hosting stuff (Think database, website, game servers) and possibly VMs. The insane amount of cores will probably definitely help with my work.

It's not any better for gaming than a $200-300 Intel quad core, not a single bit.

But you are implying it is equal, which is excellent, then the sheer amount of other stuff I can do will definitely be worth it.

I think even a 1 gen core i7 will be faster in game then qhat he wants to do.

Pair it with a good video card and games will run just fine. Having all that extra processing power is worth the slight tradeoff in gaming performance IMHO. VirtualBox/VMs/etc will love it. Load it with RAM too.

That sounds great! I've been saving up for awhile, and I'm drooling at the thought of 64 cores and 256 GBs of RAM. I just wish AMD released a steamroller opteron...
