Unfortunately they don't emphasize enough that things do and will change during the development process. Most of the time, it's improvements so people are happy. Sometimes, it's downgrades which make people unhappy. It's not that they're lying to their player-base, it's that they had to change directions along the way. It might be helpful to explain the change, but then again it might not. Gamers tend to forget/forgive these things once they get their hands on it so maybe it's better to not show weakness in their development abilities.
I tend to be optimistic and not believe that they rendered those early shots just as a marketing strategy to hype the game.
