Some Quick Headphone Advice

Thread Starter
Hey guys

Recently a section of my grados sr60i have broken and while they are a fantastic pair of headphones to use when it's quiet I find them lacking for any other use due to their open nature. So while I figure out how to fix my grados I've been wondering what would be a good pair of headphones for me to purchase when I'm out and about or when it is loud. To clarify I'm looking for a pair of headphones I can take to school with me and listen to while I'm commuting or even listen to at home when it gets loud. I'd also like to sometimes use them for gaming or general use on my PC, which can get fairly loud at times. Now to answer some questions I'll probably be getting:

Soundcard: no sadly I'm stuck with onboard audio although I've heard that the onboard audio on my specific board is fairly good

Budget: ~150 although lesser than that would be good

Music: I listen to almost every genre of music but the genres I listen to most are metal, rock, and punk

Now I've heard very good things about the ath m50 and I currently have found them on sale for 75$ This is really tempting but I've heard some very big cons about the headphone as well especially regarding their comfort. I'm just wondering is this the best deal I'm going to get for my particular use case scenario or are there a better pair of cans?

Thanks for taking the time to read and help smile.gif

Try to get on the recondition deal going right now on the AKG K550 for $130 shipped.

http://www.harmanaudio.com/search_browse/product_detail.asp?urlMaterialNumber=K550-Z&status=

I wear these when my wife is blasting her music and they isolate very well.

Really? I was under the impression that they did not isolate very well from watching a review. Apparently they were designed to basically emulate open headphones or something and as such let in a lot of noise. At that price though they're looking really really tempting. How are they portability wise?

They are not a perfect isolation

That much is true, but they sound a fair bit better.

Although, 75 bucks for M50s is a flipping steal.

The K550's emulate the soundstage of open headphones, but they don't leak like open cans. They keep things nice and private both inside and out.

$75 is an incredible value for M50's. Where is that at? I might have to pick some up just because they're so cheap.

EDIT- Since you are coming from Grado's and listen to metal/rock, have you considered stepping up to the SR125 Grados? You may be disappointed with any headphone if you are looking for that Grado sound signature. They do leak like crazy though...

I have the Ath-M50 and can indeed confirm they can become uncomfortable after prolonged use and hurt your ears. There is a process to stretch the band that apparently works in that regard although not tried this myself as yet.

Fostex T50RPs are closed, and sound amazing for the price after some simple mods. IMHO mine sound way better than the ATH-M50s, but $75 is a great price for M50s...

If you really want something portable with good isolation, have you considered IEMs?

EDIT: The t50rps are $130 now, which is a bit more than usual.

Yeah they have gone up in price recently, and they also need an amp.
