I've been in contact with Several people from Valves TS, many post looking for help on here and other forums. Couldn't figure it out.
Had to downgrade back to 7, and waseted money on a new OS that I cant use.

Civ5- didn't work
CSS: didn't work
L2D2: nope
Porta1/2: nope
and a few others.

( stand alone installed games worked fine, Origin games works fine )

This is trying it with SEVERAL fresh installs on seveal different hard drives, bios settings, GPU's, etc.
Basically valve just told me that my computer must be broken.

Several people got the games to work on 8.1 but for whatever reason, I cant. My room mate had a similar issue, but he isn't a fan of 8 so he didn't care about going back to 7, I liked 8, but since I'm only on windows for games, I've alot of money wasted because I have a product key I can't use.

( fyi, games used to work on 8, but 8.1 is where the problems started )

The only game I've had issues with was Dark Souls... Thats because GFWL is the worst thing ever. CSS works fine for me.

Windows 8.1 is what Windows 8 should have been. It fixes the bugs in Windows 8 and gives an overall better experience.

Used it fulltime for a full week. Couldn't handle it.

The redundancy of the charms menu, the lack of intuitive and user friendly UI, even when using start8 cause I would still be forced to interact with default metro apps on at least some occasion, be it task manager, skype, mail, or items in the charms menu.

BTW, easy transfer is gone now so going back to windows 7 was not really friendly in anyway. Completely disabling UAC requires a registry entry, and the overall aethetics didn't rub well for me either. Also had to find a way to enable a "vista" version of the gagdets in order to get my windows 7 gadgets back.

The "supposed" quicker boot times even on an HDD that windows 8 claims are only due to delayed startup on some of my installed services like MSI afterburner, teamviewer, skype, etc. Other than that it was same if not slightly slower than windows 7 when booting directly to desktop.

I use and own Windows 8.1 I highly recommend you to switch. You get used to it within a day or two. Windows 8.1 also gives a better performance then Windows 7 smile.gif

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is the best OS I've ever used. I use it frequently both on a touchscreen and a mouse/keyboard, and I have no complaints.

I don't use Classic Shell or anything like that, either.

Two, is the lack of information on the bottom bar of explorer, especially images. In windows 7 I could select an image and it would give me information such as resolution and size. Windows 8 just gives me file size. I don't know if there is a setting to change this, I really haven't looked into it.

Third is that I can't hit my windows key to show the task bar anymore. I play most my games (D3, WoW) in windowed full screen and in order to check steam messages or go back to my browser I'd hit the windows key to bring up the task bar. Doesn't work in windows 8 so usually I just alt tab cycle. A bit slower but not a huge deal.

Other than that, my experience with windows 8.1 has been pretty good. Takes a while to get used to it, but after that its a really functional OS. Nowhere near the dumpster-on-fire I was expecting from the forum crying about it.

Interesting. Thank you!

Yeah I have been a windows XP, media centre, vista, windows 7 user, and I like windows 7 the most. As soon as we installed his windows 8 I couldnt instantly tell I wouldnt like it.

I didnt use it for more than an hour or so, but it didnt look the same it was all just tiles on screen. Now wether that was because we didnt mess with the settings and download some taskbar gadget I dont know, but even with it I could tell I wouldnt like it. All the windows look odd, its like they look pre windows 7 in tersm of aesthetics, which to me doesnt make sense for something that is meant to be up to date.

I just get and have always had the impression that windows 8 is made solely for tablets, and the fact MS try to push it so much just irritates me even more.

Yeah, it's "opposed". I was just afraid to outright correct you. lol I'm a wimp like that. :/

Anyway, reading your post sounds to me like what I am expecting to be saying if I try Windows 8.1. lol

I'm using it on a touch screen monitor and I honestly don't see the point. Anything you can do with the touch screen can be done easier with a mouse and keyboard as far as I can tell. I only use it a couple days a week at school though. I'm sure there are ways to fix these things, but I wont be installing it on my home computer until I have to to use DX12 or something.

One could argue though that if you don't have a keyboard or a mouse, then that's awesome. Except, I just described a tablet. lol

Just to clarify, the Power Menu did exist in Windows 8. But you are certainly right about overly complicated shut down in Win8...waaay to many clicks for that. The "Shut down or sign out" was added to the power menu in Win 8.1 which makes it much simpler. smile.gif

Hmm...

Maybe if some you know has it you can give it a try... Also some else posted about steam games not working I believe maybe driver related cause I have about 50-70 games on steam and they all work just fine

I suggest you "find a trail copy" or test at a friends and give it a try before you buy it.

Yeah, it's funny. I didn't think about looking for a free trial until right before I looked at all of these new replies that I'm replying to here. I discovered that Microsoft is still offering 8.1 Enterprise as a free trial, so I might stick that on one of my spare drives that I'm no longer using.

It also has the option to disable all the hot corners/charms. 8.1 did add the ability to disable some charms but classic shell has the ability to disable them all.

The power menu also has an option to change the command prompt option to powershell if you want to stick to metro and use powershell.

Yeah, I remember looking into Classic Shell once, but I thought that I read or heard somewhere that Start Menu searching is kinda gimped for some reason. I don't remember why.

I upgraded several months ago from Win 7 to 8.1 for 2 reasons. One... I wanted a fresh install of windows(it had been a year or so), and Two I wanted to see if it would live up to being faster for gaming. I installed classic shell asap after Win 8 install was done. Then i got rid of the log in screen via some youtube instructions. Well, that worked for about a month then some update came through and I cant get rid of the log in screen. So THIS is the only thing that Ive found that annoys the crap outta me. Other than that its been stable and no issues besides the log in screen on start up .

So I dont use 8, but my wifes laptop has it. So I dont have extensive knowledge of it, but one thing that has driven me batty with it so far, is the photo viewer. On vacations, we take lots of pictures, so naturally there are a lot of junk shots, like blurry, fingers, ugly, etc.

So in W7, I just que up the whole folder of pics in picture viewer and blow through the folder of pics in a flash.

DEL, ENTER, DEL, ENTER, RIGHT ARROW, RIGHT ARROW, DEL, ENTER.... ETC. That way I can zoom through getting rid of pictures in W7 very quickly. I may be a moron, but I cannot figure out how to do that in 8.1. Its always find the stupid garbage can icon, (like on a tablet or phone) with the mouse and then manually delete it. Its a huge pain.

There may be a better way to do it, but I havent found it. Makes me so frustrated to use it I will put all the pics on my Desktop just to go through pictures.

Also, trying to figure out how to get out of programs is stupid. The best way I can figure how to do it is alt-F4. Which to me is a big pain to have to do. ESC doesnt even really work. Can't minimize apps.
