Centurylink connection less reliable than a carrier pigeon with psittacosis

I upgraded my Centurycrap connection to "20"Mbps a few months ago. It worked pretty well for a few days, but ever since then no matter the modem or router, the connection drops randomly, and often won't let me upload any files to websites. Some days it's absolutely terrible, like it's having a damn seizure going on and off 3 times a minute for hours. Then some days it's almost problem free. The lights and everything stay on, but there's no connection, and when windows tries to diagnose it it says something about the DNS servers not connecting (but I've tried many different DNS servers and the same thing happens). My connection is not great even when it is stable, maybe 10Mbps on a really good day, but I think that's just what happens with this terrible, awful company that's 100x worse than comcast.

Modem is TP-link TD-8816 Router/Modem in passthrough mode
Router is TP-link TL-WR841N set up with the PPPoE settings to kind of function more as a modem/router than the actual modem.

What could be wrong?

You may have to put the modem back into routed mode in order to access the interface.

What's wrong? Centurylink is what's wrong, they are the worst, unfortunately they are all I can get where I live atm. The minute literally anything else comes this way I'm dropping them sooooooooooo fast.

I know Century Link made some changes to their network configuration and are pushing for new modems as a result. Most people who own a modem are able to get an upgraded speed with the newer technology, but they still need to replace their modem. I don't know your area, when it was changed, or what your speed was before. I also don't remember what modems needed to be changed.

However, doing a quick search of recommended modems brought me to:
http://internethelp.centurylink.com/internethelp/modems.html

Your modem doesn't seem to be listed anywhere, so that's probably the first thing to consider changing. You could buy a new modem and ask the store about their return policy, then return the modem if it doesn't solve the problem.

Century Link runs off the phone line in the house, so beyond that it's hard to say if the problem would be on the pole or in your house. The next thing to do would be to have a technician out. If you have them add the @Ease program it will cover the tech visit without any possibility of getting billed. @Ease should be free for 2 months, then it would cost 5$ a month for the next 3 months or so before going to $9.99. If you have the tech out and then cancel the @ease at the end of the 2 month period, you wouldn't pay anything and they could figure out the problem for you. A technician who is able to check the signal strength at the point of de-mark, along with where your modem is connected would be able to figure it out a lot faster than trying lots of different things.

Just my 2 cents...

Yeah I'm not giving them an extra $5-10 a month when they do crap like this.

It's ADSL2+ capable, and that's all it needs to be.
