How can we help our friends in Turkey?

Thread Starter
I am against all forms of censorship. Website blocking is censorship in every sense of the word. Youtube and Twitter have helped Arabs in the Middle East immensely. The Arab Spring was the result of computer nerds and activists getting together. The Turkish government has no idea what people are capable of. They are not computer experts. They do not know that Youtube can be accessed in a country even when the government has blocked it. But the people need to understand that there are ways to get these services, and hopefully the government won't know what hits it when people start getting wise to this stuff.

The better you know technology, the better you can use it to your advantage. In a technologically advanced world, knowing technology is a real asset. In this case, it may save lives if people over there learn how to use VPNs, IP changing software and hardware, and browser add-ons.

So I would like it if the OCN community helped them in every way possible. If we can think of ways to get them access while keeping it simple enough then the sky is the limit. If this becomes popular enough, then maybe some tech journalist will pick it up. If not, then at least we tried. And we have to try.

If the mods do not like this then I will not argue. I know this is political, but I think it belongs in the Networking and Security section because this is where people who really know about this stuff will most likely be.

I know there are other countries where websites are blocked. This will be of value to them as well.

So to start, I will list some tools that I have come across.

For Firefox and Google Chrome, there are 2 add-ons called Youtube Unblocker and Foxy Proxy. Youtube Unblocker uses a way of making the site not recognize your country, and FoxyProxy allows you to circumvent censored sites by using proxies instead of a direct connection to the site.

For anonymity from the government, TOR is a tool that allows you to keep yourself private when online

These are the ones that I know can work. So if someone can explain them better then that would be great.

I think the old OCN would be different. I feel if I provide any methods to help, they'll be removed.

Welcome to censorship 101.

Youtube unlocker is just a proxy that sends your traffic to there servers

foxy proxy is just a nice interface to your proxy settings, neither are anything "special", Im pretty sure its agsint teh TOS of this site to go posting ays to bypass any sort of content filtering, its best to keep polotics and legalitys away from forums wink.gif

Its pointless "teaching" people about things to circumvent censorship such as proxys and VPNS if they dont understand what they are and how they work. There is always a trade off (for example tor isnt exactly anonymous if you are using the plugin and not the browser bundle, using a proxy send your traffic to a unknown third partys, using VPN's may be unstable depending on the MTU or the type of the connection)
