Should I upgrade from i7-920 for using VM?

Thread Starter
Hi guys.. I have had the I7-920 for 5 yrs.. I usually use my system for to run virtual machines.. Sometime 2 or 3 at a time ..
So will I see any "real noticeable" difference if I upgrade from i7-920 to haswell series? Is it really worth it, money vs performance ratio ?..

Get a Xeon X5650
It is a 6 core for cheap

Plus the 4770k does have VT-d, therefor is even worse for VM's then your i7. Get the Xeon and more Ram, and your machine would be perfect for VM's.

Depends on what you do, usually running multiple VMs causes the need for more ram than anything else, but as I said it depends on what you use the VMs for. If you're running compute heavy stuff then you'll see an improvement. I'm quite happy with my X5650, and I run out of my 12 gigs of ram way before the CPU starts to hold things back.

I wouldn't spend $400+ to have slightly better performance for a couple VM's, but it really depends what you're allocating to them and what you're doing on them. Since you're running two or three, I'd probably pick up a 12GB RAM kit and call it a day. Again though, that depends what you're doing with them.

I use the VM's for streaming music , and few others for software projects .. ( a justification for why I use 2 or 3 VM which can be done on single VM or even on the main machine is mainly b'coz i tend play a lot with my pc and end up reinstalling my OS to fix the problems. smile.gif )
Yes i see quiet a few on Ebay ..

RAM and throw the VMs on a small SSD. It will net you more performance gains. Run the VM's at their minimal usage you predict for them to have

I used a i3-2330m and ran 5-6 VMs daily when I was going through school

While the x5650 is a great and affordable upgrade for the x58 platform, its not needed for this scenario
