Need better alternatives for this case.

Right now I'm using a Fractal Design Define R4 case. It's a nice case, but only for single card setups. For multiple card setups, I would pretty much have to take out the drive cages (both of them) to get any decent air flow to the GPU's (and I have a LOT of hard drives). What would be a better case to SLI in? I'm looking at the AIR 540, but I'm kind of thinking it's a bit overpriced and that I would have to jerry rig all of my HDD's in there somehow (its default HDD space is pitiful).

For the record I have about 6 or so HDD's right now. One of them is an SSD. I'm thinking about taking 2 or 3 out, though and just putting their info on a larger 3TB drive that I have... since their sizes are all below 300GB. This would leave me with about 3HDD's (2TB, 2TB, 3TB) and an SSD. Also, I am merely stating this is a possibility. I would prefer not to.

Also, would prefer to not go to something that's friggin massive and heavy, like those full towers.

So what case would be the best fit for me?

Thanks.

How about something like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112304

Lightweight... will handle all your drive if needed... not too huge

Or something similar?

Whats your budget? Do you want radiator capability?

Check out the 650D for a mid tower. I stacked them with a size comparison tool. You'll get some nice extra space without going into a full tower or something bulky: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/obsidian-series-650d

650D + Fractal R4

That Lian Li, if I'm doing this right, is actually smaller than your R4 (Lian is the yellow):

That kind of looks small, and it doesn't seem to have any more fan slots or airflow capability? Maybe I'm missing something...

I don't have any particular budget, really. I know I made it sound like I was eliminating the Air 540 mostly due to its price, but it's really mostly because it doesn't have any good slots for extra hard drives (that and it does look overpriced in comparison to what it has in it; ie it looks like it can only hold that price due to lack of direct competitors with that form factor). I don't have any particular budget, but let's say under 150? That sounds rather reasonable right?

And it's not that I need something "small". I just don't want anything that's colossal and so heavy that it almost takes 2 people just to lift the case alone (I went to Fry's and saw one of those lol).

Well mainly I'm looking for extra airflow opportunities (ie fan slots or overall case design choices that are better, as in the Air 540). It's not really room to work with that's the issue (though having more would be nice, to an extent). As a note, one of the cards in my SLI setup has a Kraken G10 with a Corsair H55 on it. It's just that I have the radiator faceplanted on the bottom of my case because there are only really two options as to where to put it without somehow running it through the drive cage, which is really silly. I would prefer to not have to mod my case, either. I wouldn't do a good job of it.

Ok.. that helps a lot... I guess that Lian Li is a little small (I have had small case fever lately, but I like to mod them). Check out the Antec 280... it is not huge, but has a great design for airflow. I was running SLI 780s' in one until just a few days ago... when I went to a smaller case that I modded heavily.

The 650D that BloodEagle mentioned would be a good choice also... some of the Corsair cases are well designed for gaming / SLI implementation.

I used this one in a build for a friend... and he loves it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147175 but it may be larger than you want. Tons of airflow though, especially for GPU's.

There are a bunch of cases out there... very personal choices...

Okay, that Rosewill is getting closer to what I had in mind in terms of airflow because it's got the large number of fan slots on the side (or the 230mm alone, that's nice too). Would the Kraken X40 fit anywhere? Using that as my CPU cooler. I think it mentioned one of the slots was 140mm, so I guess it should. Also, a lot of my fans are Noctua NF-P14 FLX, but I think that they'll fit in 120mm slots since by default they need an adapter to go in 120mm slots. Thanks for the suggestion, that case looks interesting; very reasonably priced as well.

Is there anything else that takes a unique approach to airflow, or has the PSU separated somehow (like the Air 540)? Also I wouldn't mind going towards a full tower if there are marked advantages to any of them. What I simply want to avoid is a case that weighs like 50-100 pounds by itself. I bicep curl a pretty decent amount but I shouldn't have to use all of that on my computer lol.

The Antec 1100 is a great case also... lots of airflow, and the drive bay is well designed. http://www.antec.com/product.php?id=704505&fid=4&lan=us

The Rosewill Thor V2 is really popular, but I have not built one... so don't know what they are like first hand. Some of the larger Corsairs look awesome... and are supposed to be great cases.

Radiator fitting is always debatable... I usually look for builds on the case I am curious about, and see what was done with it. Sometimes manufacturers will specify compatibility, but most don't.

Full towers are great if you want the extra room... but they can be heavy or costly (or both! lol!) There are just so many cases on the market... that it is hard to make recommendations in some ways. I usually prefer to only recommend cases I have actually touched... not something I have just read about.

Yep, that Thor looks excellent as well. Too bad it's out of stock or something at most places. >.<;

So here are some possibilities right now:
- The two Rosewells you linked (leaning towards the Thor due to all that space)
- Corsair Air 540
- This thing I found, it's quite interesting (though there's no space for my Kraken X40, so I'm not sure what to do there): http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/cooler_master_haf_xb_review,9.html (could just jerry rig my HDD's in there somehow).

That's just what I really like in terms of what I'm asking for here.

I'm at work right now, I'll probably go to Microcenter and then maybe Fry's in order to look at some of these cases. Sigh, I really should have thought it through better when I picked this case. I really liked the sturdy, metal drive bays and other features (like padding and fan control), but truth be told for the high end SLI build I'm doing it's just not very idea. I should have spent more on it (or been smarter about it). I also really hate cases that sacrifice possible airflow and put random useless windows on the side. =_=;

Oh and this is a bit late but this is most of my part list. Doesn't include a few new things but yeah: http://pcpartpicker.com/b/Hfj

Thanks for all your help so far.

I have looked hard at both the HAF and the 540... just haven't gone there yet, lol!

I am doing a build right now in a Lian LI D600... and loving it. But it is outside of your listed budget... and might be overkill.

I also just moved my Workstation rig into one of the smallest ATX cases I could find... and had to mod it a bit to make it work. But I could run SLI in it if I wanted, after the mods.

It is all in what you want, how much room / money you have, and what you want to do with it. Fun Stuff! thumb.gif

Thor in stock:

http://www.rakuten.com/prod/rosewill-thor-v2-w-system-cabinet-full-tower-black-steel-14-x-bay-4-x/228641591.html?listingId=204114434&scid=pla_google_RosewillInc.&adid=18163&gclid=CK-YwvCiwr0CFdBcMgodVzUA1A Used to be BUY.COM... I used to do a lot of business with them.

Appears to be in stock at newegg.. but that price... ouch:

I really am considering the HAF. I just need to figure out what to do with my Kraken X40 with it. But in terms of airflow to me it looks absolutely perfect. One big fan on top as outtake, everything else as intake. Heat rises naturally, so it's literally perfect in that regard. Plenty of air, from what I can see. Also need to figure out what to do with my HDD's in it. =\

I looked at the one you discussed just now, but what I don't understand is why they would put the PSU on the same side as the components if they could easily avoid it with all of that extra space. As I understand it one of the hallmarks of cube designs is doing unique arrangements with the components. So why? The price is pretty ridiculous, too, yeah. 360 bucks is kind of much for what I think one should need to pay for a great case.
