i5 4670K + MSI G45 MOBO overclock Guidance

Hey guys,

i have a 2 month old build with

i5 4670K cpu
H100i cooler
MSI G45 Mobo
G.Skill 1866 16 GB ram
EVGA 760 GTX 2 GB

With that aside. i have been trying to over clock my cpu and i have followed various threads and forums. Please let me know if im doing something wrong or anything i could improve.

my settings in the bios are :

CPU multiplier - 44x (FIXED mode)
Ring multiplier - 35
vcore - 1.17 override mode but it shows up in HWinfo at 1.2
vring - 1.15 override mode
CPU input voltage - 1.89 but it shows up in HWinfo at 1.904

turned off XMP for ram and set it to 1600ddr3. Is there a way to have it back to 1866 to increase the speed of the ram? or is it better at 1600?

I have ran AIDA64 for 2 hours and Prime95 on blend for 30min with highest temps on aida64 at 60C and 63C on prime95.

Some questions i had were do i leave the both vcore and vring voltage on override mode for daily use? Also my vcore, vring and cpu input voltage seem abnormally low compared to others. Should i be worried? even though i set my vcore in bios to 1.16, on cpu-z it read core voltage during testing at 1.184-1.192, is there a reason or concern for this?

please let me know if i should continue to drop my vcore, vring and cpu input voltage or anything else that would improve efficiency.

I am surprised that you got your 4.4 GHz overclock stable at such a low voltage. Voltages look fine.

You could also try manually setting your ram clock manually and ram cas timings manually. Follow the stickers on the ram sticks. They specify the rated clock and timings.

E.g 1866 MHz 10-11-11-27.

thanks for advice , i looked at the specs for my ram and it says 1.5 V, cas- 9 , 9-10-9-28 1866mhz XMP ready. But when i looked in the bios i didnt understand the way it showed up. what is all that trdc or trc meanings in the memory settings? if i manually set the ram to 1600 for stress testing should i put the settings on auto? but when i use the comp for daily use set it back to 1866 and manually input settings?

First of all, the ram doesn't stay at 1600 forever. After the CPU is all set and done, you can go ahead and push the ram as far as it'll go. You don't worry about voltage being to low. After you are set and done, (MSI G45 Gaming mobo correct?), keep the voltage mode on manual but set the C states to C7. That's where you voltage drop will be from. But that comes after you have a final overclock multiplier and voltage. 

 

If you want to take the method that is more precise, you will need to spend more time up front. So what you could do is to make sure that x44 is stable. Once you know x44 is stable, if x45 or x46 or x47 turns into a nightmare, you know you always have a fallback on x44 and you know if x44 fails to work, your CPU is degraded. Once that's done, x45, then x46, etc etc. Of course we come into stressing... My personal opinion is overnight x264 to consider fully stable. The pros of x264 is that you get lower temps, in line with what you will get realistically under max load. Of course, to up the stress we simply run it for an 8-12 hour chunk of time to ensure stability. My experience is that if you're unstable, it typically shows within the first hour. If you decide to up that voltage and go for broke, you will most likely be temp limited by Prime even though that's the default go-to tool for overclocking in the past.

 

Make sure x44 is stable.

Go to x45 and make sure that is stable.

Repeat 1 and 2 until you can't anymore.

Overclock uncore until it's not stable anymore.

Enable C states to 7.

Overclock ram.

just to clarify set c7 after my cpu is stable right? Im going to run x264 tonight and see how it goes. i did get a couple errors with the newer version of prime95 which gave me a Clock_watchdog_timeout error. I read that it is the same as error 124 and the common problems were v core or v ring ratio. i have slowly been upping the vcore for now. I noticed even though i reduced the CPU input voltage it still stays at 1.904. should i just set it at 1.9?

If by newer you are talking past 27.9, then that version of Prime is extremely stressful. It is hotter than IBT on max and only Linpack is hotter. I would just use Prime 27.9 at the very most, anything past that is complete overkill.  You can set C7 right now if you'd like. I don't believe it be detrimental to your overclocking if you set it now.

ok so last night i ran x264 but didnt know how to run it continuously, it asked me how many times i want to run loop 2 so i input 20 times. when i woke up it looked like it ran ok. The HWinfo had vcore rating at 1.216 max, vccin 1.904, VID at 1.185, the max temp one of the cores reached were 63 C. i also ran prime95 for 3h45m on blend everything the same as x264 but the temps were 71,74,75,69 max. Does the temps look a bit high? should i lower vccin and vcore a little?

bios settings were

CPU multiplier - 44x (FIXED mode)
Ring multiplier - 35
vcore - 1.185 override mode
vring - 1.10 override mode
VCCIN (CPU input voltage) - 1.890
C7 turned on

turned off XMP for ram and set it to 1600ddr3.
inputted the main ram specs which were 9-10-9-28, but i left everything else on auto because i didnt understand it. also the voltage is on auto as well. after everything, i will increase the speed back to the original spec of 1866.



im not sure how long x264 ran but does this seem semi stable? i will make another run tonight but how do i enable x264 to run all night? does

Your temps look fine.
Personally, I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference running x264 20 times vs 40 times. Even then, who's to say that it would not have passed the 41st trial? You'll find within this thread that this topic can be debated for pages and pages.

If it seems stable off of 20 passes, as well as your Prime 95 run, then just use your computer as normal and check for stability with programs that you use every day.

Re: voltages - you may want to check if your ram is spec'd to run at 1.5V, and set the voltage to that.
For vccin and vcore - you can try lowering it little by little to find the threshold of where you get instability, and then go just above that. Otherwise, your temps don't look too bad, although I'm not sure of what cooler you have.

2N is the command rate. Actually I'm not v sure I think it's under tfrc(settings that contain 1t/2t)
