First AMD Build!

Thread Starter

Hello all, I've only had Intel builds in the past. I'm looking to build an AMD gaming desktop for the first time. I'll admit, I haven't looked up a whole lot of information yet. I've had info given to me by friends, and that only got me so far. I'm interested in building an energy efficient powerhouse. I want to run most the current games on the highest possible settings with absolutely no frame drops. As well as being able to broadcast my games, via Twitch for example. I'd also prefer a very silent idle machine. Now the price is still up in the air. I would like to save as much as possible, of course. But Still want something amazing! If there are fans that I could buy later down the road to make the machine more silent, or not buying all the RAM up front, I'm all for it. Other than heavy gaming, and multi-tasking, I do a ton of photo editing, and will be attempting video editing. I currently have a 24" Dell Monitor 1080p. But in the future I'll be upgrading it to a higher resolution!

MOTHERBOARD

No clue. Would like the option to add a ton of RAM!

PROCESSOR

Currently debating if the 9370 is worth the #30 difference of the 8350. Thoughts?

GRAPHICS PROCESSING UNIT

Still browsing.. I have zero interest in utilizing two cards at the same time. If anything I'd rather buy a cheap card now for under $100, and buy something crazy later.

POWER SUPPLY

Something very energy efficient!

MEMORY

Would like to start out small, like one stick of 8GB of RAM, and add more 8GB sticks later.

STORAGE

Just 1TB for now, I'll get a large SSD in the future(200GB).

I'm looking at the Seagate Barracuda(ST3000DM001).

CASE

Would like a tool-less design! I don't even wanna break out a screw driver to get inside, or swap things out if I can avoid it. It just makes it less annoying to clean out the case.

COOLER

It looks like right now I'm going with the H80i, thoughts?

I would think to go with the 8350 over 9370. Less heat=less fans=less noise.
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo or something similiar would be close to silent(no pump) and would cool the 8350 well.
Ram: Kingston, Corsair or G Skill are my choices

My recommendations:
Motherboard:ASRock Fatality
CPU:FX8320/FX8320(anything over FX8320 are just OCd versions of the 8320)
GPU:R7 240/250/250X
PSU:see list of recommended PSUs
Case:I have the Lian Li Lancool PC K59.Ships with three fans and has thumbscrews and plates for PSU and mobo installation. But you'll need a screwdriver for the CPU coola'
CPU Cooler:depends on your budget.212 is good for any situation!
RAM Vote:GSkill

Once you start overclocking, heat and power differences between the 8350 and 9370 are going to be marginal. Then again, so will final clock speeds, in all probability. Thus, the 8350 is usually the better deal.

The Evo 212 is not something I would OC an eight core FX on. Most CLCs aren't going to be up to the task either. If you are shooting for a high OC on an eight-core FX, only the very best CLCs or a decent custom loop will cut it.

My current favorite AM3+ board is the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX r2.0. It's at the very top of the price range I can remotely justify for an AMD setup, but it's got the VRM and cooling to handle the most power hungry AM3+ parts, most less expensive boards cannot claim the same.

What size tower are you thinking about?
What is the max you are looking to spend, there was no definitive price point?
What jaydev16 said FX8320(forgot about that) and G Skill.

Oh, hmm. Well what if I'm not all enthusiastic about overclocking? I just want a CPU that can handle anything I throw at it, nothing for boasting about. Any overclocking will be done through the program, and I probably won't do anything crazy in all honesty. Same goes for the RAM and GPU. Should I get a step down from both of those processors?

Price is kind of open. I'm just looking for reasonable. If possible under 1K. But if it's worth the upgrade, then I'm all for it.

Size doesn't matter. Although I would prefer something light, that can be transported if possible. NOT NECESSARY! The smaller the better, it's going under my desk. Should be enough room for any case.

I've read the FX 8350 and the FX9000 series are just OCd versions of the FX 8320.I know its true for the 9000s,but not as sure for the 8350.
G Skill-high headroom for OC.I think that may be useful if he wants to FSB OC.

I would say CPU at least a 8350, 9370 and 9590 are slightly better binned but a 8350 is a gamble above 4.7ghz. The 8320 is more like a crap shot getting over 4.6ghz. For the board I would say Asus sabertooth 2.0 or Asus cross hair V Z 2.0 board, better features full 8core support, better memory over clocking. Also 9370 and 9590 tend to run or at least have a better chance at running 4sticks of 2400mhz ram. Psu seasonic or a seasonic rebrand. GPU for cost effective look for a good used one, or second had even off this website there is some deals at times. HDD westerndigital black.

You could go with the FX6300, never used that though. Personally I wouldn't go with less than a FX8320. I am running that in my mATX AMD build. I am not over-clocking mine so the Hyper 212 is fine untill my H80i shows up.

Blameless is correct, I had a FX8350 @4.5 on a custom loop 240rad p/p and was getting very nice temps, then my PC got stolen...

Correct me if I am wrong but doesnt the SaberTooth v2.0 (V3 or r3) have the PCI-E 16x3.0? Would prove to more time lasting.
