because people don't realize that a game publisher uses preorders as a sort of "lock in" mechanism for gamers. If you preorder a game then you are more likely to buy it and less likely to return it. The days of preordering a game so you have a guaranteed copy are over. Digital content cannot be returned and if you preorder a game and do not get a refund by 11:59, then the game is yours forever. This is why preordering is stupid. No preorder bonuses are worth it. The vast majority of the time you will eventually get that bonus in a new DLC anyways. They make you feel like if you do not preorder it, you are going to get a substandard game. If you look at 2 gamers, one who preordered and one who didn't, you will not see 2 different experiences. The same thing can be said for crowdfunded games like Star Citizen. People think that if they do not "invest" in it and be part of the movement, then they will miss out on the game. I guarantee when Star Citizen comes out I will have just as much fun playing it as someone who helped fund the cause. And some people just HAVE TO HAVE IT THAT SECOND! I don't understand that at all.

But hey who am I to judge? I spend money on stupid crap all the time.

I preorder digitally at times because I know the game will be to my liking and I want it ASAP rather than a day later, for example. I'd rather do it digitally as well because preordering from the likes of Play.com incurs a one-week wait to receive the parcel from Jersey in the UK to Gibraltar. Local stores MAY stock the game but may not hold many copies, plus it involves walking! smile.gif The good thing about stores in Gibraltar is that they don't respect release dates. Games are normally released on Fridays but they tend to receive stock of them by Tuesday (three days early) and just sell them there and then. If I can be bothered to walk for it and can get one, this tends to be beneficial to even preordering digitally.

Two reasons for me:

1) Preorder exclusives or early access.

if not 1 then

2) Because I have the money in hand at the time and might as well put it toward the purchase while I have it.

I normally don't preorder games because I know the price will drop fairly quickly. Interestingly enough, pre-order bonuses make me hold off on buying the game entirely until there's an all-inclusive DLC edition available for a decent price.

The three most recent exceptions to this general thought process for me (and their reasonings) were:

1. Torchlight 2

I knew the devs were going to put out a quality ARPG since they had experience with Diablo 2. I also thought it was a nice thing to support since I liked what I saw from their videos and interviews at PAX Prime. It also came with Torchlight if you preordered, so that kept me busy, and the launch price was very fair at $20

2. Skyrim

Big fan of Elder Scrolls. I wanted a physical boxed copy for the goodies that came with it and I wanted to play it launch day so I pre-ordered and got it on my doorstep on launch day. The DLC is still expensive on this game and you can actually get the "Legendary Edition" for less than buying the DLC separate, so I kind of ended up regretting this.

3. Diablo III

Loved D2, had high hopes for D3 after playing the beta. I got burned. The game was pretty bad as far as ARPGs go. So bad in fact that it led to my preordering of the first game on this list which I was much more satisfied with. I preordered it so I could get it and play it on launch night, but as we all know the server fiasco prevented that from happening :/

I do preorder. There are several reasons off course.

1. When I preorder something, I know it will be good. I never made a mistake.

2. I want the developer to get the money as early as possible, I want to support them as much as possible.

3. Games are usually cheaper on preorder and come with exclusive content I like to have right away.

4. I may as well do it while I have the money and not forget.

Preordering for me has nothing to do with playing instantly after release, sometimes it takes me weeks to play the game I preordered. I want to support developer first of all.

You know that the developers do not get a cash stream like you are thinking. They get paid a percentage of the revenue at the end of a set length of time, usually a fiscal quarter. But I am not criticizing your reasoning, just pointing something out.

I know that, but the amount of preorders and attention for the game in general is important for making a good impression on gamers and publishers. Games also get way cheaper during the fiscal quarter so more purchases earlier at higher price is more money for developers in the end.

Game publishers take a large cut from the sale. The publishers are the ones who lose out more during a price drop than the developers because the developers have a contract that the publisher must abide by. For example, if a game is $60, the developer might get $20 per copy sold. This would explain why the lowest that most games go in price is $20. If they go lower than that, then it is because the developer is no longer getting paid per copy sold because they either met their cap or they are no longer developing for that publisher.

The marketing, legal fees, technical support, translations, and the like are very expensive for the publisher, hence why games cost $60 instead of $40 like they used to. It's not because the developers take a larger cut, it's because the publisher needs a bigger revenue stream to make up for these costs.

Another point, the revenue made by you waiting to buy a game until there is a price drop helps you more than it hurts the publisher and developer. They rely on millions in revenue from tens of thousands of sales. You waiting for a price drop is better because they will not see that hit in revenue, but you will see the savings and will thus be able to buy more games.
