If you look at the screenshot, the tiles in this new start menu can be unpinned like in the current start screen. So you could have it without any tile (metro thingies) and make it look like the old start menu. It's a win-win for me.

Win 8 is an abomination. Win 8.1 is usable. Win 8.1 with update 1 is much better. With the start menu back, it would be hard for me not to recommend it over win 7 to my friends.

What's so different from Windows 8 to windows 8.1? The only thing I noticed in the update was it was less buggy and the search bar works. Going from Windows 8 to 8.1 also was a massive headache and I was forced to format my system. I didn't hate Windows 8, just found it counter productive. 8.1 still feels the same for the most part. Everyone praised the start button but it's useless. It' just brings you back to metro. 8 with classic shell is still better then any stock version of 8 or 8.1.

Nice things that win 8.1 brought:
-start button
-more start screen customization
-UI improvements for the desktop user
-boot directly to the desktop
-easier ways to disable the hot corners or whatever they are. In a desktop they are horrible for me.
and more i don´t really remember, i didn't use win 8 much.

The new update adds more things, revamps the start screen customization (right click contextual menu), more ways to close apps, new shortcuts to shutdown the Os in the start screen. If you are using m+kb, now instead of using apps to view images by default it will use the desktop viewer, etc etc.

EDIT: i should also say, that once tweaked, i don't dislike the start screen. (The fact that in 8.1 i can use the desktop background for the start screen makes it better for me).

8.1 allows you to set Windows to load your desktop by default instead of the start screen. Also brought it something of a "start" button in the lower left where the classic start button was. Not quite the same functionality, but it's the thought that counts..

Also, greetings from Ontario wave2.gif

Thing is, Classic shell did a lot of those things.

* Adds a start button (traditional, not one that takes you to the metro)
* Lots of customization
* Boots to desktop
* Disable hotcorners

etc etc

and it's still more intuitive and easier to use then stock 8.1. Point being, Microsoft should stop beating around the bush and just make it traditional for PC with all the technical improvements that makes it faster then Win 7. The metro and tablet related stuff should all be a secondary objective for them. This 8.1.1 or 8.1.2 update is still not going to be enough for the majority of people who have problems with windows 8. Yea you can't please everyone but the issues ARE so simple that many modders did it within the release of Windows 8. And before someone says "well just download the mod"... well we shouldn't have to mod our operating systems.

I was trying to explain to my father how to use windows 8 and that was torture. Simple things like pictures are in a different location and are run by a different application. After about 30mns of trying to walk him through it, I just gave up and downloaded classic shell lol.

lol why do you say its off topic , its totally on topic. Microsoft just announced universal apps for their eco system, You know that Apple WILL DO THIS TOO , its written in the sky. And they will sue whoever has the same concept even they wernt the first to invent it.
