I could be wrong but it feels like, for many people, the start menu is like the foundation of a house. If the foundation is not right, the new siding for your house  is not of much interest.

This is exactly why I haven't upgraded. I can do it for free...but why would I want to?

Exactly. The start menu, to me, is a large part of what has always set windows apart. I used windows 8 back in the RC release, and tbh it IS something I could live with.

That being said.. Being ABLE to live with something and LIKING it are two very different things.

somehow MS are making the right steps in almost every decision related to their products

Yes, the massive workflow changes inherent with Metro vs Aero are completely cosmetic and small. It's nothing like the entire layout changed including the loss of some features, the gain of some new ones, all of the new keyboard shortcuts, etc.

when I have issues I press the start menu and it takes me completely out of desktop which is useful for ALOT of issues I have had.

I figured it out and use 8.1 as a daily OS. It's far worse than Aero/ClassicShell is for me.

To me, your error sounds like PEBKAC..Even when I've had or repaired PCs with malware on them they've never rendered the start button useless. Occasionally a bug in Windows (That I've been getting rarely as far back as Vista's beta) prevents my mouse from clicking anything though. (It clicks behind the window, usually after right clicking something in the system tray)

Rot with Win 7? Nope. Not me. Win 7 will most likely be my LAST MS OS.

Hello Linux. I'm looking at you.

I'm glad that Linux is becoming more and more of an option as time goes on, AMDs giving it proper driver support (Helping the oss drivers and making catalyst entirely user-mode. That should mean it won't break on new kernel versions) and more games/engines have Linux versions than this time last year. Even people who'd never switch should be happy as it means MS has to try harder with new features, etc in Windows.

They still need to get rid of the flourescent live tiles.

A huge blue icon for mail (POP3 isn't supported IIRC) that doesn't do anything but show a number , and the live store that isn't used 90+% of the time, is a comical example of how useless those live tiles are sometimes
post #138 of 423
To me, the OS is just what launches and runs my programs. I don't need "live tiles" to fill the screen and tell me what the weather is. I don't buy an OS to interact with it, I use my programs to interact with my content.

I remember back in the day you could replace explorer.exe on XP with your own gui shell. It was nice.

Same here, I've had a unwanted volume license key with 6 copies of W8 from work for a while now and myself nor anyone else in my house hold want to move off of 7 to 8.

If you are a student you can get Windows 8 embedded for free, or even pro if your school pays Microsoft.

Embedded is a version meant for kiosks, however it functions just like any other version of Windows 8. Smaller install footprint because its nearly a bare-bones install.
