[Verge] Microsoft is bringing the Start Menu back - Page 17

M$ should separate mobile from desktop like church from state. Bringing back the start menu is too little too late. The problems with Win8 isn't just the start menu. It's how programs are tied to Windows apps and that's confusing the heck out of old Windows users and new. When I open a picture on the desktop in Windows 8.1, it doesn't open with Windows Photo Viewer but instead opens through the photo app. One minute I'm on my desktop and the next minute I'm not, confusing yet? Ever try to change your Windows 8 login password in desktop mode control panel? Takes you into App mode, again, one minute I'm on the desktop and the next minute I'm not.

If I'm working in desktop mode, I expect to stay in desktop mode, stop throwing/forcing users to use app/tile mode. That's the problem with Windows 8, just like the company and the people it hires, it can never make up it's mind.

Would you the gas and brake pedal in your car switched around every hour?

there's alot more issues than that. I tried dialing into a VPN connection and realized it opens through the metro side bar, I could not copy the username and password, since once you click away, the sidebar disappears. I really have no clue what they were thinking

Interesting.

Might be worth it giving Win 8 another try once these roll out although this time I will be smarter and do so first on VM instead of real install. What I do not quite catch from the news is that can I "turn off" metro now so that it does not keep creeping out of its box. If nothing else it seems like step in right direction to make W8 usable on desktops.

As long as they keep the option to go back to metro screen. Really started to like it. Can't really understand the hate against it.
Metro is way better than start menu IMO.

They were thinking everyone's on a 10.1" touch screen tablet. Looking at my 22" screen I'd say they were right.

Meh, you could always just right click the corner in windows 8. People that think they NEED the start menu either haven't tried 8 or just bandwagon hate on stuff they no nothing about.

explain how I can paste the user and pass for the vpn connection into this panel. Clicking away closes the panel so you are never able to copy the pass

explain how to do this since "people hate for no reason"

It's a little something called familiarity. When you've had it (more or less) the same way for over 15 years (err, 18.5 years) people tend to grow accustomed to how things have been for so long. Change is something that takes a while, not to mention dedicated effort, to accept. Yes I know the Windows 7 start menu is different than previous version, but it wasn't astronomically different (plus it took all of 30 seconds to switch back to "classic" mode if you wanted the older, XP style start menu)

Myself, I think Metro looks neat but it was the biggest reason for me to not even look at picking up Windows 8 when it came out, simply because of how many horror stories I was hearing (some from my spouse who tried to release candidates) about how difficult Windows 8 was to navigate with just a keyboard and mouse.

This update, whenever it goes live, makes me actually contemplate doing the switch. Some of us just really like how things have been, doubly so if we do our best to use the mouse as little as possible.
