The only news is that they think next gen cards are about 6 months forward. They release them at around October. Release announcement somewhere in Summer, to have time to pump the news for a couple of months.

You can't magically make all the heat from the GPUs leave via the top of the die, ignoring basic thermodynamics. The substrate and BGA solder balls connecting it to the PCB will carry a significant fraction of that into the surrounding card. Ever felt the back of a video card in operation, or the area of your motherboard behind the CPU socket at load?

Also, the losses through the VRM are not going to be inconsequential. You are going to see ~85% efficiency, depending on temperature and load, which means that if the card is using 500w of power (and it will probably use more at peak loads), it's going to lose 75w through the VRM.

And finally, high clocked GDDR5 consumes quite a bit more power than DDR3 by virtue of being clocked much higher and usually running at higher voltages, so yes, the memory itself will need to dissipate more than 20w at load, probably much more. Even so, it's possibly the least of significant heat loads on the PCB.

Anyway, end result is still the same, 25-40% of the heat the card makes will not even make it to the water.
One GK104 part per PCB in a loop that looks to have an order of magnitude more surface area (is that three 480 rads?) than the radiator that comes with the 295X2 isn't really a good comparison. If you chose your pump wisely and I'm sure you did, I'd expect negligible temperature increases.
Not a good comparison either.

The ARES II is two lower power GPUs on a larger PCB with a better VRM, and it's CLC setup has a much thicker radiator than the one shown with the 295X2 as well as two fans.

So, you have a lower power card, with more cooling; I'd sure hope it works well, if the 295X2 is to work at all.
Judging from how well AMD kept the vrm and memory temps on the reference 290/X (which was well below 60 degrees, a number that can't be be matched by any of the custom cooled cards) I don't think that's going to be an issue here. If you take a look under the cooler, there's a sizeable heatsink on the vrm with a fan sitting right on top of it. The problem with the reference 290/X cooler was that it didn't keep the core temps in check and that will most likely be fixed as a result of the AIO coolers. I expect temps to be within the high 70s and mid 80s, numbers that should improve, if two fans are used on the rad. Still has to be said that all of this is still speculation though... but it makes sense than what you are proposing.

Reference 290X parts do have passable VRM cooling, but "well below 60 degrees" is a fantasy. Stock clocks, stock volts, throttling disabled, 100% fan speed produces 80-90C VRM temps at peak loads (peak load meaning the most demanding software I can find) on the 290X samples I've tested. However, gaming loads are generally much lower.

Pretty much any air cooled vrms are going to be hot, just barely under requirements really. Except for Xfx, they said screw temp specs let's make our cooler practically burn the vrms alive.

Can't take you serious if you using furmark as a basis for claiming that the vrms get too hot. That's a threshold that can't even be hit by miners.

I hold my GPUs to the same standards as my CPUs and I find it difficult to take seriously parts that cannot be expected to reliably execute the most demanding code conceived for them, without enormously underclocking themselves.

Mining is hardly the most demanding thing that can be done on a GPU and just because something is an outlier doesn't mean the hardware shouldn't be able to handle it.

Anyway, 90C isn't "too hot". Not around stock clocks anyway. Most GPU VRM fets are rated for 125C. That said, cooler is better, both for longevity and power efficiency.

I still find it hard to believe that Hawaii is hotter and more power hungry than first gen Fermi. I think I'd have to have more than a single case of anecdotal evidence to believe that one...
