[VC] Exclusive AMD Radeon R9 295X2 Preview - Page 6

I like the look of the card itself. Very industrial... minus the LED fan. Can't say I'm a fan of the CLC but whatever. It's a clever way to snatch back the performance crown.

Nvidia will likely release the 790 with an LCS as well so they can compete at the GHz level...
If the leaked benches are true, absolutely. This thing is apparently faster than 290X Crossfire @ stock.

From what I have been reading this could come available by the end of the month. Guessing Newegg will receive first.

Lets hope the 280, 290, and 290x keep dropping in price so Newegg will have to sell lower. biggrin.gif

Curious to see what the aftermarket block market will end up being.

That doesn't make any sense.

It's not like buying two 290Xs separately for $1100+ is going to be any less than 500w total TDP. And why do people make such a big deal out of power consumption? You're not putting this thing in a battery-powered system. The point of these cards is massive performance, not performance-per-watt. The card delivers massive performance, and that's all that should matter, especially at a forum where our tag-line is "the pursuit of performance," and not "the pursuit of efficiency".

Anywho, I actually think the card is impressive. AMD's frame pacing is still not on par with Nvidia's, but looking at the hardware alone, I'm impressed that they got 2 full Hawaii cores on one PCB clocked at 1018Mhz. And water-cooling as part of a reference design? I think that's pretty sweet. And I actually like the way it looks honestly.

I'm really interested to see how this does with the frame pacing fixes in hardware that Hawaii has, as well as what games can get two GPUs like this to do with Mantle. Mantle has a lot of cool features that make AFR obsolete. If we get something along the lines of that (and I'm probably being greedy) but if AMD can get both Hawaii GPUs to share memory (which is kind of the point of HSA), this could be a really killer card. I'd love to see HSA shared memory trickle over from APUs. It'd mean AMD could spend half as much money on memory as Nvidia would have to, and there might even be performance gains because it's all on one card.

The last time we saw dual GPUs compete from AMD and Nvidia, Nvidia just waved around "FRAME TIMES!!!" (which was pretty valid given how Tahiti and AMD drivers performed in CF), but AMD fixed all of that now. So it's going to be very interesting to see frame times with this compared to Nvidia and the dual Tahiti GPU card that came out. I'm hoping we can see some reviews that compare 7990, Titan-Z, 295x2, and probably single cards down to GTX 770 and 280x.

Looks like AMD got sick of the crap they've been taking for the 290/290X coolers and decided to use metal on this thing which is nice. Still not up to the aesthetic beauty of the 690 IMO but it definitely looks like an expensive piece of kit. The performance looks like it'll be impressive too...

Welp..looks like 700w psu wont cut it=[

it depents on memory used, VRM performance(thermal and electrical) mainly. miners will buy if it performs well smile.gif. If it performs like vrm-choked XFX cards, price is low biggrin.gif

I gotta say after my last experience with an stock R9 290x I was sure to stick with NVidia for the foreseeable future. But this might actually change my mind again and I might just hold off putting my current two 780s under water until the first reviews and benchmarks are in.

I am pretty sure if AMD sells them for around 850€, I´m in.
