Graphics Cards from Gumtree / other second hand sites - Page 3

I've precursored that by sharing the email thread with PayPal customer support, so that I have a separate record of him claiming to send just the letter first. I've let them know that I am expecting this to be a scam item, and that I wanted to share it with them before I escalated it to a return case so that they would know I was promised a letter _and_ a card.
It's a practice I've gotten used to as a designer, you send yourself an email with the work in as a CC and leave it unopened as a proof of work/by date.
i will be ringing them this evening, also.
i feel a little stupid, but I guess I was pulled into a dreamscape
fortunately, everything is listed to one guy, and all the following I do always returns to one individual, so the personal email & hone address (from another business venture he has) is legally legitimate.

I've brought two Graphics Cards off Gumtree before...

One was a used 6950 for AU $160 posted a fair while ago now.
The most recent was a brand new Gigabyte R9 280x (with BF4) for AU $350 fully insured and posted.

I made sure I got receipts and pictures through email, phone, whatever else I could think of and was as cautious as I could be.
Transferred funds by Paypal. Both cards arrived and are still working to this day.

As others have said. If it's too good to be true, usually is.

PS: Inquired about some other GPUs on Gumtree/Ebay and never got receipts so I steered clear.

Huuuuge alarm bells started ringing for me as soon as I read Paypal gift on this thread.

If any company specifically asks for it to be a gift, then 100% guaranteed beyond a shadow of a doubt with bells on top, scam!

I've encountered a few "too good to be true" deals online before and as soon as there is a whiff of PayPal gift, I turn and run

y'know... I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same guy or an associate. It all sounds very familiar

Being a long time lurker on this site I have just registered to find out what happens with this case/thread. I have a general interest in scams and can see how this will play. Others have already mentioned but I didn't register for nothing. smile.gif

On paypal when you select "send to family/friend" or "gift", this is an instant payment that cannot be called back/requested back.

Luckily you didn't do that. However this letter he is sending will probably be tracked and when you receive it (I wouldn't sign for it if you are required) he will send the info to paypal who will process the payment.

Another thing related is that he could have claimed this was a "digital only" sale (such as web coding etc.) because on paypal, digital only goods do NOT get buyer protection.

Please keep us updated with what is happening regarding this situation. All the best and I hope paypal are VERY understanding.

Well I capped his advert, and the email thread, where he repeatedly refers to GTX780 and Graphics Cards, so I feel I have evidence on my side.. I will be ringing PayPal today, and will be keeping ontop of it..
the worst bit in my mind, is I thought to ask for a time stamped picture of the card, but decided not to bother when I could pay for it via PayPal w/ buyer protect

I'll keep this thread up to date.

Single advertisement gpu's second hand is plausible as some people just flat out dont know an items value. But when its someone pretending to be a company, there are so many things in this thread that give you negative impressions.

Well I was a bit foolhardy, I guess.
I would appreciate people not coming into this thread just to call me an idiot, etc, as that doesn't contribute anything.

However, I have just gotten off the phone with "Rob" in "Glasgow" from PayPal, and they said that if he sends a 'verification letter' and claims that's the item then they will (having seen my email proof) still investigate w/ buyer protection, which was my only worry.

So either he ships me a cheap GPU, or PayPal refund my money.. is how I see it currently..

The annoying thing is that the scammer will still keep the money most likely even if paypal refund you. If you have sent it, was the person verified? They have probably moved the money into a different account by now also.

the ad has vanished from gumtree now
