Recording game footage, ShadowPlay likes to record large amounts of data to my SSD no matter what, looking for something else.

Hey,

I'm looking into recording video game footage. I've used ShadowPlay, but for some reason it refuses to not use my SSD at times. The first time it happened it wrote 3tb, the 2nd time 5tb. I've now totally given up on using it since no matter where I point it to it likes to sneak in massive amounts of data to my SSD at times (I've ran tests where it didn't do it, then suddenly it does it without any warning).

So, I'm looking into something else. My first option is "Fraps". I'm wondering if this would give me the same problems as shadowplay? Have people had issues with it recording to your SSD (os drive) no matter where you tell it to record to?

Now Fraps is less then optimal, since I know it uses up a lot of cpu. My next question is what's a good suggested internal capture card? Something that can do 1080p, I'm not worried about streaming, though I'll take any added features of course. As far as price, $80 - $150ish would be ideal (Or free =).

Thanks,

Sounds like Shadowplay is pre-buffing video when you don't want it to. You should be using Manual Mode not Shadow Mode.

FRAPS would not be my first recommendation to most people. The quality is unbeatable (it has a good lossless compression option), but it's performance hit and bitrates are significant.

I normally use MSI AB for most of my general recording needs.

This may help: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/653314/geforce-experience/move-shadowmode-temp-files-away-from-ssd-fix-workaround/

If you're set on something else, Mirilis Action! is a pretty great tool. I think it's $30 but works incredibly well in my experience

randomish idea, what if you installed the software on the drive you wanted to record to?
sort of like how steam works where i cant remove their default location for games, i can only add and then manually have to select it.
but if i install on another hard drive, it becomes the default.

Thanks,

use ffsplit as its free and low on resources. plus you can broadcast and its still low on resources. also recording should always be done to a secondary or storage designated drive as it is usually constant write and that is bad for a ssd.

fraps is the last among a number of programs due to usability. most people dont want to pay for it and the resources it hogs makes it an not used unless i got it for free program. ffsplit and obs do so much better being free and then their are options like xsplit and wirecast for paid programs. xsplit is cheap but again wirecast is one of those programs thats i wont use unless i got it for free as its $500 or somewhere up there.

Thanks for the link.

I'm mainly worried about the SSD issue. I mean, I should have well under 1tb total usage, yet have over 8 because of ShadowPlay.

Yea, the linked solution seems like it should help. I don't like the idea of moving my temp folder around though. I guess there isn't many other options using SP, since everything else I've done still results in massive writes sooner or later (Even though I'm not using ShadowPlay shadow feature). I'm wondering if it isn't me pressing the wrong short cut or something when turning record on. It doesn't seem to use the temp folder in my normal usage.

As for ShadowPlay performance, it seems to work great and have min effect on my system gaming performance while in use (Nothing I notice). If it weren't for it writing massive amounts of temp data to my SSD (and crappy GeForce experience) I'd love it.

I think I'm just going to sit on this for the moment. I'd like to just get a capture card and be done with it, but, that's also assuming it wouldn't try to do the same thing without redirecting my windows temp folder.

why not try https://obsproject.com/

its totally free, you can record directly to w/e hard drive you want.
if you wanted you could even stream your game.
