Overclocking the :devil-smi 270X

I rely on FFXIV Benchmark to tell me if my GPU is stable or not these days.  If I can get a stable clock in FFXIV, then it will run in 3DMark or Unigine benches.

The :devil-smi had a little more headroom than I was anticipating since all the reviews I read on this card pegged it at 1225 on the core.  I was pleased to get the following clocks:

1260/1570 @ 1300mV +20% Power

FFXIV

3DMark11

The RAM clock is fair, and gave more than I was expecting being Elpida.  I took a photo and looked up the specific chip on my card.

I found this deciphering chart on Overclockers.com

If this chart is correct, then this card has 6Gbps RAM chips installed.  If they are 6Gbps chips, then I got a small OC out of them.

The question is, why would they have been underclocked to 5.6?

I was displeased with the temperatures on the core and VRM1...

So I removed the cooler on the :devil-smito see if I could improve temperatures for VRMs and core.  I am pleased to say that I was able to decrease both temperatures by ~10% with a little effort.

New TIM & Thermal Pads - Lots of Pics! (Click to show)

WAY too much paste from the factory!

Thermal tape BARELY making any contact with VRMs.

The larger sink pulled off with barely any effort at all.

This smaller sink was making considerably better contact than the first, but it is still sub-par.

I didn't want to remove the thermal tape from the factory sinks in case I ever have to RMA the card, I want to be certain I can put it back to stock configuration.  I had some sinks lying around from some Arctic Accelero coolers, that I put some Fujipoly Extreme thermal pad on.  The contact is much better on the thermal pad compared to the tape.

The sinks I had were too wide to fit in between the chokes and caps, so out came the Dremel/safety glasses to do some trimming :coolsmile

It fits in there now :specool:

Chopped up a few to cover all VRMs thoroughly

Perfect Fit

Next was cleaning off all that extra paste...Arcticlean FTW!

Scraped off the heatisnk

There was a tiny little bit of tape stuck on the VRMs, had to clean that off as well.  ArctiClean took it off with ease.

Cut some thermal pad

All in place

New TIM

HSF wouldn't go back on, 2 sinks were too tall...trimmed em down

The fruits of my labor: RAM clock had to be reduced 5MHz as it was now causing black screen lockups...not detrimental to temp comparison however

1260/1565 @ 1300mV +20% Power

FFXIV Before

FFXIV Core reduced 9C and VRMs reduced 7C

3DMark11 Before

3DMark11 Core reduced 8C VRMs reduced 7C

I need to do a little more testing with stock clocks as I don't anticipate running the card overclocked.  It is, after all, in my HTPC where I value silence over a few extra FPS.  I hope this drop in temperature will make the card completely silent :yessir:

What's next in the buildMoAr :devil-smi parts have been ordered!

Fans - I have decided to fill all available fan locations in the case.  Dual 80mm at the rear, Dual 120mm on the side, and a 200mm up front.

  • (2) Enermax Magma Advance Fans 80mm
  • (2) Enermax Magma Advance Fans 120mm
  • (1) BitFenix Spectre Pro in Red 200mm
  • ModMyToys 6-Way PWM Fan Splitter w/ 12in PWM fan cable extension

Power - SATA power cable does not reach up to the BD-RW.  I don't want to hook up an entire modular cable for one SATA connector; Ordered extension cable.

  • Mod/Smart 6 Inch SATA power extension cable

GPU Cooling - I'm not 100% certain that my thermal pad upgrade to the VRMs is going to hold permanently; Ordered thermal tape in case it doesn't hold.

  • JunPus Thermal Tape
    • This is a new product that Performance-PCs is carrying.
    • It has the highest thermal conductance, 1.8 w/mk, of any tape that I could find.
    • It is a fraction of the performance, ~16%, of the Fujipoly Ultra I have installed, but if push comes to shove I will use it.

**While browsing for best thermal tape I read about mixing TIM with thermal epoxy to make it easier to remove.  I happen to have some Arctic thermal epoxy, so I'm probably going to test out this theory***

CPU Cooling - A friend of mine has a leaky H100 that he is donating to my cause :) I'll be removing the crappy, hard plastic, lines and replacing them with traditional tubing

  • MasterKleer 11mm/8mm Dark Red UV Hose
  • Phobya 11.2mm Hose Clamps
  • Koolance Tubing Spring 10mm

Picking up the H100 tomorrow, and all the parts should be here together on Thursday as some are coming from NewEgg and the others Performance-PCs.  Hopefully I can make some progress in days following.

Adding Fans to the 250D

I was pretty eager to install the additional fans that I received from NewEgg.  The first one I dropped in was the BitFenix Spectre Pro 200mm fan to intake cool air.  I thought it looked nice out of the package, but once lit up it is pretty awesome.  Aesthetically awesome, but loud...much louder than I was anticipating actually.  On top of being loud, it does not fit inside the 250D without having to bend/cut a tab out of the way.  I didn't want to bend/cut anything yet so I figured I would test before modifying my case.

I then installed the (2) 80mnm Enermax Magma fans above the I/O ports to intake fresh air for the CPU radiator.  First I tried them on silent mode, and they were silent but left something to be desired for airflow.  Ticked up over to performance and the breeze was now noticeable, but the noise was slightly annoying.  Tried out extreme for a brief moment, and they definitely move air but the racket was absolutely unacceptable.  I set them to performance and then it was time to benchmark to see how this additional airflow would effect temperatures.

Temperature Results

I am sad to say that $50 for the 200mm and (2) 80mm fans was a waste of time/money.  I was anticipating ~5C drop in temperature here, but it just didn't happen.

CPU load temps only dropped: 2 | 2 | 0 | 1

I ran IBT for 10 runs on high load with the 3770k at stock/auto settings of 3.7GHz

Before Fans CPU Load

After Fans CPU Load

The GPU core temperatures were actually up 2C, while the VRMs were down 3C.  No idea why core temp went up, but the VRMs coming down slightly does make sense.  I did not take any screenshots here unfortunately as it was late, and I was very salty that my time/money invested amounted to diddly squat

I didn't even bother opening/testing the 120mm Magma fans.  If the plentiful breeze from the 200mm and 80mm wasn't going to help, then adding a single 120mm wasn't going to either.

I also tried turning the 80mm fans around to exhaust, just to see if forcing the air out the back would help...but it didn't do anything for CPU/GPU temperatures either.  I think if you were using an air cooler for CPU, it may be a different story.

AIO Hose Replacement

Went right at it with a razorblade

Liquid inside is VERY green

What a HORRIBLE design, no wonder they had problems!

When it got on my hands, it felt exactly like automobile Anti-Freeze

The hoses are unbelievably brittle.  On one of the ends as soon as the razor blade touched it acted if it didn't want to hold together anymore.  The slightest crack in the tubing anywhere on it would undoubtedly lead to a nasty leak.  I never purchased one of these Corsairs with the rigid tubing, but if I had, I'm pretty sure I would have boxed it back up and returned it immediately.

I got the hoses off and drained the fluid...but that's about as far as I am unfortunately...To be Continued :)

I took some information off of another guide here on OCN for hose diameter, but I do not feel comfortable with how the 8mm ID hose fits.  The hose clamps I purchased are useless in this scenario as well since they do not go tight enough on the radiator barbs.  It may be possible to use a generic hose clamp to tighten them down, but I'm not going to take that chance.

I am pretty disappointed as I wanted to use the red tubing I purchased.

What now?

I will be returning all of the fans to NewEgg.  I won't be returning the hose/clamps to Performance-PCs as it's not worth the effort and $ involved.  They only cost me $15.75, subtract 20% restock, and $5.95 USPS flat rate envelope and I would really only be getting $6.65 back.  I have been considering putting an AIO on the GPU to eliminate its sound entirely.  The hose should be perfect to replace that of the Antec 620 :)

The fan splitter worked just as it should have.  I don't think I'll be needing it here, but it will likely find a home in my main rig to replace the 6 fan splitter cable.

I was strongly considering purchasing clear tubing and using some EK Blood Red coolant...after much deliberation I have decided against it.  I'm not really concerned with it causing problems in the system, but there are numerous reviews stating that stuff stains ANYTHING and EVERYTHING it touches.  If something unfortunate were to happen involving one of my (3) cats, I may have to kill one of them :laugher:

I have also been back and forth..and back and forth regarding what fans to use on the radiator.   Corsair was a strong contender, with any of their line, especially the LED ones.  I love the SP fans, but even with the 7V resistor, they are too loud for the HTPC.  The air series with LEDs have pretty terrible static pressure, so they are out.   I was also very close to ordering some Phobya G-12 fans, that had many qualities I liked and wanted...however fan statistics are usually not very truthful so it is hard to say if they will perform as noted...I don't want to be in the situation with returning items that I am displeased with as I am right now.

Ultimately I have decided on black Tygon 1/4" ID 3/8" OD tubing.  I will use distiller water, with a little anti-freeze for corrosion resistance, and some DeadWater biocide.  It lacks the pizzazz of colored tubing/coolant, but will undoubtedly be functional.

After much debate over what fans to purchase I have decided on Silenx Effizio 120mm Red LED for the radiator.  I was going to get plain Yates, but there has to be a little something to view through the top window :)  Every review I can find for them says the same thing; QUIET! That is my foremost concern in this application.  I have even seen a couple reviews on NewEgg stating lower temperatures when used on radiators; what fans they were coming from, I don't know, but I'll take the chance.  The 240mm radiator will hopefully make up for the possible lack of static pressure on these SilenX fans; can't actually find a rating on them.

*Sent an e-mail to SilenX to see if they can enlighten me on static pressure*  *The Corsair LED fans may still have a chance*

A 140mm Yate Loon 140mm Medium Speed will occupy the front of the case; tried, true, cheap, and most importantly silent.  The 200mm just seems worthless for this application after using the BitFenix. Most of the air ends up crashing into the PSU/HDD cage and ultimately is wasted.

More information to come in the next few days.

SilenX sent me data sheet on the fans, and I think these are going to the winner hands down with 1.96 Static Pressure.

Now I just need to decide if I want LEDs or not...the plain red is nice looking as well...

Typically companies like that aren't honest/accurate about CFM and static pressure figures, so I would be very cautious if you do go with that fan. SilenX's motors aren't exactly historically reliable compared to others, and their iExtrema Pros had outright fake specs. Can they change? Probably. Did they this time? I really doubt it. Despite the technical bearing disadvantage, I would expect Yates to do a bit better.

I know NewEgg isn't the be all, end all source of good information, but people will tell you if something sucks; Nearly all reviews of these style Effizio fans on NewEgg are positive.  I am an EggXpert reviewer for The Egg and would like to think some of the users have enough common sense and a decent amount of useful knowledge to be able to give an accurate and truthful review/opinion of products.

Fortunately NewEgg's Premiere Membership :applaud:rocks and I don't have to pay restock or return shipping.

Fans are one of those purchases where you kind of have to have a sense of, "well this may not turn out as planned"...as it did with the BitFenix and Enermax fans.

I know most companies aren't honest about their specs, however, they ARE quiet which is my #1 priority.  I'm not going for benchmark records on the CPU here so as long as they disperse heat I should be OK; especially considering the 3770k is delidded.

I have used SilenX coolers twice before.  They cooled well and were remarkably quiet...we will see how this goes.

I am curious to know how they fair against the Corsair SP fans. I will compare on the Antec 620 and again when I have the H100 installed.

Thanks for the heads up, and for checking out my build log!
