i7-3820 @ 4.6GHz 1.4v... expected temps under water

Hi,

I've been bitten by the watercooling bug and now can't seem to stop buying parts for my loops!

I'm currently getting about 55-60 degrees after a few minutes of Prime95 on my i7-3820, 4.6GHz with 1.43v, does this reasonable to most folk?

Have a XSPC raystorm on the CPU, 3x EK-FC780s on my 780ti's and 2x NexXos 420mm rads with 6x Noctua NF-A14 fans on each rad, each fan running about 1000 rpm. Ambient temps are around 19-20 degrees.

Since I've bought all the expensive bits and I have the space in a caselabs TH10 for several more 420mm rads, I'm considering adding another one (or two!) in the bottom of my case.

It's not like I'm unhappy with the performance, the GPUs under load at stock are about 32-36 degrees and when OC'd and 1.21v maybe 40+ but I'm considering doing a 1.3v mod to the GPUs to OC them more which would dump a load more heat in to the loop so if I'm going to tear down the loop, it would be the opportune time to add the extra rads.

I would probably ditch a push pull config if I went with the extra rads to keep noise at a reasonable level and save buying any extra fans.


So, the £150 question.... do you think there's much room for improvement or would I just be throwing money away at this point!? I really wanted 780 Ti Classifieds for this build but I got my cards through EVGA's step-up so didn't think it worth it to sell them for classys.

Any other suggestions to improve things?

you would honestly best be asking this question if you knew your water temps. knowing your present delta will help in estimating any changes you make. otherwise you are straight-up guessing.

btw, x*C after a few minutes of prime isnt anything. it could go a lot higher in a couple of hours. it has always taken me about 3 hours (of blend) to hit max temps.

What is your pump? How is the flow? You got a lot of blocks in that loop for a single pump. Pull-push is noisy at best, better just use higher rpm push fan. I prefer the option to add another radiator instead of increasing the rpm if you ever need more cooling, that's a good decision you made.

If you disable one or two gpu, you should see better temperature on the gpu left & cpu. First, run one gpu with the cpu note the maximal temperature, then add a gpu note temp and repeat with the last gpu. I guess there is some program out there that are able to save data (time, temperature) into an excel chart so you can make a graph seeing how temperature evolve over time. It will avoid you to wait a long time until the water hit its max temperature before you can note a trend. You can do the same with two and three gpus... no need to know the delta temp. I am pretty sure you will see how much you could gain if you add an extra radiator. You could extrapolate that every block benefit from a fixed amount of radiator [2x420] so if you add a radiator you get 3x420 which is very close to the configuration you would have if you only had 2x420 with only 3 blocks (2x420/3=280 per block) vs (3x420/4=315 per block).

You asked a question... I hope you got your answer. I think you temps are good and you shouldn't worry about your set-up.

I doubt you'll gain anything worth the cost of a 420mm radiator. I had Prime95 24 hour temps of ~58*C at 22*C ambient with a MCP655, EK Supremacy and RX360 cooling my 3930K at 4.5GHZ @ 1.4V. No GPUs in the loop. I really doubt you'll gain anything....worth the money and time.

you need to know what the max temp of the water is to know how its performing now. he basically has 2x 480 rads. thats a 240 rad for each block in his loop. if he has a delta of 10*C, what will another 480 rad drop it?
after a certain point, youre only lowering the delta. a processor is going to run as hot as it want to run. my 2500k runs 54*C playing bf4 and it wont go lower. all adding another 240 did for me was lower delta to 8.5*C under full load. since summer will be here real quick, a new phobya 400 xtreme will be hanging off the edge of my desk. my 2500k isnt going to run cooler than it is now but my delta will be about 6* under full load with very low rpm fans.
i do understand what youre saying but its all about delta. not knowing that doesnt mean a lot when your hardware is running as cool as it gets.

Cheers for the replies...

Forgot to put in initial post (or took it out by accident) that I have 2x D5's in series in the loop.

I'll get some water temp sensors and take it from there.

Really one of the reasons I'm considering extra rads is I have all this space.... Shame to waste it!
