3-Way SLI Discussion Thread

Thread Starter
Didn't see a thread in particular that pertained to just simply in general "3-way SLI talk" so I figured I would start one. Now to kick us off I come with a subject of my own I would like to discuss.

I have 3 EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ 4GB Limited Edition cards and I have only recently come into using the third with my recent acquisition of an X79 bridge. Now with that being said the temperatures using 2 was pretty decent I must say, I have been so far impressed with the relative noise to cooling to temperature ratio.

With the addition of the third card, I seem to however have completely thrown something off balance in my case. At idle the top card (which for the sake of the discussion will be the only one I am concerned about since it is always the hottest) sits around 38-42 degrees Centigrade. With all three cards on a ~98% load in EVGA Precision OC Scanner I saw the top card reach 97 degrees Centigrade. That was enough to rustle my jimmies as I know and am very well aware of the fact that the thermal ceiling of Kepler is 98 degrees.

Now I did have some slight OC's on the cards to begin with, I always have, these babies were meant and selected for a bit of tweaking. I have since removed those and reverted everything back to factory defaults. The voltage was never even touched for anything, never needed to. So I know that isn't an issue.

Was poking around on my local Battlestation Facebook group, consisting of about 90 members, to help me conjure up some answers or at the very least, some kind of a solution but the only we came up with is to go about having a custom loop. That was going to cost me around $650 to do, and I said hell no. Or atleast - not right now.

As for a bit of background on the situation, I am using a HAF X with it configured at a neutral level of pressure. I have the CPU under a block with an H100 so the ambient temperatures should not be high at all. The system is on the floor with the cool air and is away from any airflow contraints and is regularly cleaned and dedustified. Any insight into the situation would be greatly appreciated.

I would greatly like to avoid doing a custom loop at the moment as it would simply destroy my bank account and I don't think my insurance company would like that to much. Thanks guys, keep the community fresh and helpful, I love this place and its user base!

I think you made a GPU heat sandwich. There is no room for intake, even though those cards are exhausting air outside of the case.

I did the same thing when I went from 2x to 3x 780s in my Fractal R4. In order to keep the 3x I had to go to a custom loop.

Three 780's in my 900D. Similar temps. It's just part of the gig with stock cooling.

Man... A loop was simply not factored into the budget AT ALL. I have to say though, I am glad to hear that even NVIDIA's newest most recent GPU family members can still suffer from incredibly lousy sandwich temps.

I may have to wind up jimmy rigging something until I can drop $700 on a loop. Are either one of you running with a loop now? You guys think I am safe with these temperatures for a while?

Still stock on mine. I'm not overly concerned about it. As long as its stable in happy.

Could you take a screen of a stress test with temps? It's not that I don't believe you, I just want to check out how those things perform. I thought about ditching these 680s in favor for some 780s but they didn't have any models with decent enough VRAM to satisfy me.

A quick question for you have you tried adding spacers in-between the cards? When I was running air on big setups I found that adding just a bit more space can really help temps.

Fantastic thought, I will certainly try this. Guess I can stop by Home Depot or Lowe's on my way home from my mom's house tonight and see if I can find some foam spacers. Did you actually see a difference in temperatures with this? I have seen it done but I had always thought it was one of those gimmicks that people did.

Funny you say this because we were just discussing in our the skype call about how the setups lack of cooling is likely due to the designs being air starved. The EVGA design the cards use already feature a canted design to help with flow but maybe that is not sufficient enough. Thanks for the suggestion my man, will definitely look into this.

Still facinates me that these temperatures are even with the cards having backplates that help with kind of thing.

There is always this.... wink.gif

It's how I finally tamed my GTX 480's at a reasonable noise level.

Here is a screen cap after running a couple loops of Valley.

780 temps

This is the setup.
